It is now old wisdom that Barack Obama created Trump—as in the idea of a national pushback to Obama’s out-of-the-mainstream agendas and the unconstitutional way in which he pursued them. Forgotten is the insulation that Obama has also provided for the excesses of Trump as a candidate and, especially, if he were to be president.
Last week, in sober and judicious tones Obama all but warned Americans that they cannot seriously support Trump, who, he implied, is little more than a reality-TV conman. But such admonitions come from a president whose chief foreign policy advisor, a failed fiction writer and D.C. insider, just bragged how he deceived the media and Washington’s insider world by feeding amateurish journalists misleading talking points. Is it serious or in the spirit of reality TV for a president to invite to the White House a rapper whose court-ordered ankle monitor goes off in a presidential ceremony, or to give an exclusive interview with YouTube personality GloZell, noted for her selfies of eating breakfast cereal floating about her in a bathtub? Obama has lectured the media that they have to vent Trump, this from a candidate who never released his medical or college records, whose speech in praise of Rashid Khalidi was suppressed by the media, and whose entire memoir was only belatedly found out to be impressionistic fiction. Obama lowered the bar and Trump skipped over it.

Although not the primary cause, Obama had plenty to do with the rise of Trump. His petulant manner of leadership and his unopposed agenda lead to Trump. The GOPe being the unopposers were the primary cause especially after the 2012 and 2014 elections being handed to them and they just rolled over and f*cked us.
I wish people would understand we are at WAR...and Trump is our general against the MEDIA, without whom (Trump) we’d NEVER have a chance at a “fair” election again.
But yes, 0bama and his administration have set a new low bar for behavior in office, which given the past several Democrat administrations is saying something. There seems little doubt that Hillary Clinton, an integral part of the last two, has openly and shamelessly behaved quite literally in a criminal manner regarding bribery and espionage. 0bama has, as VDH cites, enforced and ignored laws in an arbitrary and partisan manner. Eric Holder has proudly made racism one of the perquisites of office. You couldn't lower the bar much more than that.
But VDH is very mistaken that the media intend to apply that lamentable lack of standards to any Republican, far less Donald Trump. Those standards will snap back to the stratospheric the second a Republican takes office, which is precisely the mirror image of VDH's complaint. A fair person could not possibly hold Trump to standards higher than 0bama. VDH is very naive to hope that the media won't.

I like VDH, but that's just nonsense. All presidents since Reagan have been paving the way for Trump by refusing to enforce immigration law, and constant increasing legal immigration, and by entering into numerous trade deals, all resulting in US factories and jobs leaving for cheap labor nations and the accompanying large increases in the trade deficit.

If not for Trump, Jeb! the presumptive Republican Nominee would be the one being interviewed by CNN.

Cruz would have been eliminated from the running long before he was had Trump not been there. It would have been Jeb! 24/7 and all the Donor money would have gone with him.

Apparently, to the TDS afflicted Dr. Hanson, none of the points you raised are as important as using this poor excuse of an article to characterize Donald Trump as just slightly less an a**hole than is the current occupant of the White House.
Perhaps in a future column, the good doctor will enlighten us to any other candidate running for election that will even ATTEMPT to address the issues of illegal immigration run amok in the nation overall but has been felt most acutely in California, where I also live.
This is the most disappointing VDH article I’ve ever read.
He's been on a bit of a roll lately, and not in a good way. Last couple have been long on bile and short on content, and that isn't much like VDH used to be.
In this one at least he admits that however distasteful Trump may be to him personally, 0bama is worse in nearly every category. Here is a fellow who has repeatedly complained about outsiders invading his farm property, who common sense might conclude would have a vested interest in borders and security and the like. And perhaps he does, but you'd never notice it through the spatter of saliva in which he describes Trump.
