When I went searching I was not aware of Cherokee privilege. It was my grandmother's words ‘full blood’ Cherokee that peaked my curiosity. I had learned of the Trail of Tears in school. And some census takers were not much more educated than the citizenry they were polling. Many times the women were only identified by their first and married name. But I learned that one must have the proper paperwork, registered on the rolls to call oneself a Cherokee.. I fully expect Lizzie Warren to have the required documentation.

A rifle handed down by my mother’s side of the family is now on display as one of those used in the execution of Tsali, a Cherokee leader who led a revolt against the forced removal of the Cherokee from western North Carolina.

And, if family lore holds true, one of our great-great grandmothers was a Cherokee foundling who later united in marriage with our same family. If true, it would be an odd twist of fate.

My mom’s family is still in western Carolina, and many are undeniably now also part of and involved in Native American culture and life.

I have no American Indian ancestry as far as I know, but I did have relatives who were on the Trail of Tears--a distant cousin married a Cherokee woman and went with his family on the Trail of Tears. I find their descendants in the records as late as 1907. Some of them spoke only Cherokee despite being partly Scots-Irish in ancestry.

IF she has Cherokee heritage (like me, so little, if any ...a nosebleed and it’s all gone!) it is likely those Cherokee were RICH aristocrats who owned AFRICAN slaves, including their tyrant Chief John Ross, another corrupt politician who was only 1/8th Cherokee. Let her choke on that!!!
