Iran’s next target could be our electrical grid

Franks said that one strategic strike could create blackouts nationwide. And the consequences of this could be a field day for hackers, cripple our military defense system, and that’s not even mentioning what life would be like for normal Americans if they had no power.

The risk of an EMP attack has been around since the Cold War but according to Franks, “we’re a thousand times more vulnerable than we were even 50 years ago.”

Hmmm. So, I guess "hackers" would somehow be immune to an emp attack? Anyway, you would almost think that someone somewhere would be working on this. Right? Nah, lets install wind mills and solar panels instead.

I think Newt understands this threat better than any politician. Its a shame he “has too much baggage”, according to some FReepers, but good that Trump thinks otherwise.

If Saddam Hussein were still alive/in power, I highly doubt Iran would be making such a threat against us...

The first step should be to localize the production of electrical power, so an attack on the national grid could be quickly isolated.

My suggestion wold be to vastly expand the number of standby generators powered by natural gas, so if a part of the grid that was hit, could be cut out quickly, and the standbys could resume the flow to that part of the grid in short order, a matter of minutes or even less.

Much greater segmentation of the grid, with the baseline power supply coming not from distant hydroelectric or atomic plants, but from Thorium-fueled Molten Salt reactors, which unlike Uranium-fueled Light Water fission reactors, may be scaled up or down in size, and do not have the serious problem with large amounts of “spent” fuel rods. In fact, the Thorium plants can USE the “spent” but still radioactive fuel rods removed from Uranium plants, in effect “reburning” them, with only a very small amount of radioactive “ash” left at the end of the cycle, compared the the size of the stockpiles of the “spent” fuel rods. These Thorium plants are safe enough to be placed right in urban centers, which allows the division of the grid into much smaller segments, and therefore less vulnerable to an overall EMP burst.

Of course, it would be necessary to shield the control systems in “hardened” locations, otherwise, it would have to rely on some very quick reflexes by humans throwing analog switches.

It’s the easiest way to attack that there is.

Coupla sub-orbital nukes—over Denver and Baltimore, say—and that would be “all she wrote”.

Naaaaaaaaaaaaaah. Work on that transgender stuff.

But...but, President Obama said that Iran is a true Muslim friend of the US and that all that talk about destroying the “Great Satan” was just pure rhetoric and that we have to “understand” these poor people and extend our hand in assistance.

I mean, why, why would our glorious President conclude a Nuclear deal that might, somehow, someway, hurt our global strategic interests and our allies, like Israel?

Would the Great One risk all that?

From what I understand, the lead time for replacing ancillary equipment is years out. Transformers, switch gear etc. And no, not THOSE transformers. :)

I remember the media coverage during a blackout several years ago. The 24/7 hype is designed to incite panic.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the muzziyes cut the power in a few places and take full advantage of the ensuing panic.

There is not going to be an EMP attack it will simply done through cyber warfare and its just a matter of what day its going to happen.

Iran is far more vulnerable to an EMP pop than we are, especially politically.

Fry the command & control grid in Teheran and the mullah snake is decapitated, to be followed by national chaos. Most Iranians are not observant Muslims; Barky screwed them over in 2009 but an EMP-caused telecom breakdown would cripple the Revolutionary Guard’s ability to put down mass insurrection.

The worst EMP blow the mullahcracy could deliver against us will not prevent a devastating counterstrike. We would suffer, but the mullahs would soon be dangling from telephone poles by the hundreds.

Mullahs’ bugout kits include shaving gear and Western suits.

Our Terrorist in Chief is probably in consultation in the Lincoln Bedroom right now planning an EMP attack at 7 am on election day.

That assumes that the person in charge actually orders retaliation. I don't believe that the current resident would do so, and I'm pretty sure that Hillary wouldn't, either.

Unfortunately, even if you happen to have a natural gas powered auxiliary generator, like I have; if some rogue nation knocks out a good portion of the power grid the supply of natural also may cease as it depends on electricity to keep the pressure and the flow of gas up.

That will certainly cause widespread winter havoc.
Not many folks will be capable of heating their homes with alternate fuels.
