"Cops will do and can do whatever they want" - but be prepared anyway.
That was the message Saturday afternoon - not at a protest but at a training to prepare for one - at the Arch Street United Methodist Church. It was the first of four trainings in preparation for the Democratic National Convention.
About 50 people - mainly white, mixed ages, looking forward to demonstrating - gathered at the church on North Broad Street to discuss filming the police, supporting people who are jailed for protesting, and knowing your rights if you're one of them.
Although planned in advance, the training played out amid nationwide protests over deaths of black men by police and of white officers by a Texas sniper - and a few hours before a raucous gathering outside two Philadelphia police stations five miles north.
The Democratic convention is likely to start in a volatile atmosphere in two weeks, said Aine Fox, a member of the Up Against the Law Legal Collective, which hosted the training.
"People's passions and emotions are more heightened than in the past," Fox said.
The collective, a Philadelphia-based activist group born out of the Occupy movement, plans to offer round-the-clock legal assistance and support before, during, and after the convention. Its 14 members and supporters will have a team of 35 lawyers available to represent people who are arrested, said member Amanda Spitfire.

All I need to know. And a Methodist church. Natch.
About to quit my Methodist church. The new preacher is a huge ‘chrislam’ leftist and some chick is trying to bump me out of my principal chair position in the ensemble. And they know full well my politics.
I fear for both conventions. These riots and murders were directly incited by Barrack Hussein Obama. He has thrown gasoline on a fire even though he was proven repeated WRONG — with Trayvon- Ferguson, Baltimore etc etc. Do they ever get a clue? The prayers I have are for the innocent political patriots at those conventions. I am very worried for them unless we start cracking skulls.
Oh, please. This church and this particular congregation is so left-wing, it hurts.
I was married in that church 40 years ago, was a member until moving away in ‘79. I would not worship there today. Very sad.

I need to make a bernie shirt so i can pass back and forth to work unimpeded.
I also worry about getting back and forth to work. There have been many protests here. I don’t want a problem with the black separatist marxists, I don’t like them, but if they threaten me I am ready for masses of them.
