Andrea Leadsom has pulled out of the contest to become the next Conservative Party leader and UK PM - with Theresa May now set to succeed David Cameron.
Mrs Leadsom said she did not believe she had sufficient support to lead a "strong and stable government".
She also said a nine-week leadership campaign at such a "critical time" for the UK would be "highly undesirable".
The energy minister said Mrs May was "ideally placed" to implement Brexit, and wished her the "greatest success".
A source close to the energy minister told BBC political editor Laura Kuenssberg "the abuse has been too great" for Mrs Leadsom during the contest.

Interesting reactions. While I am disappointed that Mrs Leadsom has felt the need to withdraw in the way she has, I honestly think Theresa May is a far better choice from a conservative point of view.

As soon as Theresa May is PM, she will work to undermine Brexit and drag out the process until people tire of the issue and then Britain will never leave the EU IMO.
Yes, she was a Remain supporter and I certainly disagree with her on that, but I don’t regard that as disqualifying. She is, I believe, committed to respecting the will of the voters.
And her positions of immigration as Home Secretary while Britain was a Member of the EU should not be assumed to be those she would hold as Prime Minister of a more clearly sovereign nation.
The fact she is willing to consider altering the status of foreign nationals already resident in the UK while Leadsom was not is a major point in her favour.

This does not absolutely guarantee May becomes Prime Minister - the 1922 Committee of the Conservative Party could reopen things - but it would be quite extraordinary if they did.
This is bad for Britain, bad for Europe and bad for the world. Theresa May is a terrible choice. A good analogy would be Lindsay Graham here in the US. Imagine him as the new president.
I disagree. She is likely to invoke Article 50 by the end of this year, certainly in the next two years, and I think it better equipped to get a better deal for the UK than Leadsom was.
I think some people are making far too much of the fact that May supported Remain. She will put the express will of the people ahead of any personal position on this.
She also banned Robert Spencer and Pamela Geller.

Yes, she did. And given her position and British law, she was right to do so. That’s why their appeal to the Court of Appeal failed.
The Home Secretary has a duty to uphold British law whether they agree with it or not. I don’t know if she agreed in that case, but the decision was right in law and that’s her job.

Actually we have a few brain cells between us here in Freeperville and can understand nuances....
....and I still regret Leadsom dropping out....
