Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa, landed in some hot water this week after he gave an interview to a local TV station in his Sioux City district office and viewers noticed that he kept a Confederate flag on his desk.

King told Angelo that he had ancestors who had fought and died in the Union Army.
“Our family cares a lot about unity but also about the truth and accuracy in history,” he said, “and so that Confederate flag has been here for a long, long time, it just does a reflection of our history, it’s not meant to be anything else. And, by the way, up until about a year ago, it never occurred to me that anyone would think that it has something to do with — that it was an advocacy for anything other than, let’s just say, a piece of our history that we should remember and remember the right lessons from.”
This is actually considered “news” by whatever the hell Right Wing Watch is.
Sounds like another rip off of the SPLC.
Regardless of what ever else the flag means or even has come to mean, it is the flag of the southern Democrats.
Yep, still trying to find a real live racist somewhere, ANYWHERE! Failing that, a tiny flag will do for national news.
Mr. Lincoln’s war was really the Republicans (North) versus the Democrats (South). It just so happened that the Democrats were the slave owners. The Republicans won the war and to the victors went the spoils. They freed the slaves from the Democrat slave owners. But the reason the war began was not slavery, but the Southern states wanted to succeed.
If by “small part” he means “primary cause of” then he’s correct. ;d
I have a deep dislike of the bullying and hectoring that Southern partisans and apologists receive these days, but the truth of the matter is that the myth of the Lost Cause is a toxic burden for them and the country at large. Slavery was wrong in principle and stupid and vile in practice, and the leaders of the Confederacy — who wrecked their society and shed rivers of blood for slavery — ought not to be mythologized as noble men. Displaying a Confederate flag has the unfortunate connotation that one does not quite get that.
One-eighth of the whole population were colored slaves, not distributed generally over the Union, but localized in the southern part of it. These slaves constituted a peculiar and powerful interest. All knew that this interest was somehow the cause of the war. To strengthen, perpetuate, and extend this interest was the object for which the insurgents would rend the Union even by war, while the Government claimed no right to do more than to restrict the territorial enlargement of it.
I thought that the "small part" quote had to be false, but I listened to the audio, and Steve King did use those words. I like Steve King, but that was a gaffe.
The slaves had right to kill every single plantation owner, almost all of them demonrats. Some did revolt and kill. Now, in 2016, it is ancient history from last millennia. And completely irrelevant to all the crimes the blacks commit, including murders, rapes, destroying public order, etc.
Yes, the Southern states wanted to succeed. After seceding of course. But their secession wasn’t successful.
Yes, and it would be quite some time before those plantations would "see seed".
If it wasn’t for continual Democrat meddling, affairs probably would have settled down long ago with the freedmen, over the years coming to better and better terms with larger America on their own accord. But that would have required ceasing to treat races as political footballs (to use modern terminology).
Hmm, come to think of it, could it be said that the Negro race is the first political football that then kicked us?
We haven’t seen American Indian problems like this for over a century, in spite of a low level of continuous discontent.
But again, the freedmen never got tobacco and casino concessions either.
The issue of slavery was not the catalyst to war. To the contrary, the issue of slavery was later used as a political device to garner needed support for Lincoln’s drive towards a solidified union.

You have to look at the history... Native Americans were deemed a martial race, so unsuitable for slavery — they had to be exterminated. At least kept away. They, at least those that survived for the most part, kept their independence.
Blacks, however, were seen as a docile race and ready to be owned. They were kept close, which itself was a curse not just during slavery, but after it. They were bred for manual field labor and were completely dependent on their massahs. Now, they are dependent on the gubmint. Since they were bred for manual labor and (unless they are athletes), they just cannot participate in the manual labor due to a number of circumstances — most notably actual loss of manual labor jobs. Unfortunate but that is the truth.

And even so. That’s talking about the effect of presuppositions about races. There are lines of white people that differ in characteristics, but we never hear of the hunky lines dying out.
And also. The Democrat meddling factor really has meant a lot to the ill in the picture. At the time Jim Crow ended, black families were almost caught up with white families. But the Democrats, never able to leave well enough alone, kept on meddling.
When a modern immigrant comes from Africa, we see a whole different mindset. Those people tend to hustle, and earn like it. They may be no smarter than their slave brethren, but they have a different worldview.
