Turkey and Erdogan: Here comes the (real) caliphate
FoxNews.com ^ | July 21, 2016 | Ralph Peters

To us, “caliphate” appeared to be just another name for a vast torture chamber. But for hundreds of millions of Muslims, many of whom have nothing to do with ISIS, the caliphate is associated with a lost and much-romanticized golden age when the caliph, who was also the Turkish sultan, claimed spiritual dominion over all Muslims.

In the 14th century, the Ottomans revived the still-older concept of a caliphate, declaring that the sultan and caliph were one. It remained so until 1924, when Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the great modernizer, abolished the office as a relic, insisting that Turks had to build a new Turkey and not lay claim to an enervating empire, temporal or spiritual.

At the time, the Muslim world split into two camps. On March 8, 1924, The Economist captured the difference: For Turks and other nationalities newly free of Ottoman rule, “the Western idea of nationality is in the ascendant and the Caliphate is losing its power over the imagination.” So far, so good.

But the journal went on to note that for Muslims under colonial rule, “the Caliphate carries a message of salvation through an international Muslim solidarity.”

That message of salvation, if not yet of solidarity, is back. The ragtag ISIS caliphate is merely the forerunner of the more ambitious caliphate to come.

It’s coming in Turkey.

Convinced that history has no relevance, those same self-deluded Western leaders and diplomats refuse to recognize President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s vision for “his” Turkey. He dreams not only of neo-Ottoman glory, but of a caliphate reborn and led by a Turk. (Might anyone venture a guess as to his candidate?) Essentially, the sultan and caliph both would be back on a Turkish throne.

Today, Istanbul. Tomorrow, the world.

This sounds like a dream for Obama too. He has been trying to get the Greater Caliphate rolling by overthrowing the governments of Libya, Egypt and Syria, along with destabilizing Iraq and helping Iran become a nuclear power, but he has been having some problems keeping the momentum going. Now, a Turkish led caliphate would be another opportunity to spread the Islamist disease and death and destruction.

It’ll always be the Eastern Roman Empire to me.

Just have to get the Muzzies out of there.

I don't care how much they "romanticize" their situation, they're all barbarians to me. Hopefully, Trump's military advisors will suggest we pull our nukes from this now hopeless country and kick them out of NATO.

Let them have their Caliph. Screw with us, kill them. That goes for any threat to our superior way of life...yes you whiny blood-sucking socialists, it IS superior. Go Dresden on them, collateral damage be damned. I'm sick of PC warfare. I vote to re-build our stockpiles of napalm.

Pull out of the Middle East cesspool with the plain wording that any nation that harbors terrorists will have their leadership targeted first, then their populace in case we miss some.

It worked on Germany and Japan, it would work on Syria, Saudi Arabia, and any non-aligned threat. We go all out or we don't go at all...and that includes tactical nukes.

Just read that the wings of the F-35 are built in Turkey. Hope that is not the only source.

Hitler had his 1000 year Reich.
Mussolini had the revival of the glory that was Rome.
Putin wants to recapture the glory of Russia.
China thinks of itself as the “Middle Kingdom”.

Now this. Fun times.

Well, there's something for the jobs Trump wants to create and bring back. Screw Turkey.

The caliph can be taken out very quickly if need be.

Two things:

My Mom REALLY hates it when I call them, ‘Goat Humpers,’ so I do it at every opportunity. But Dear Old Mom is a Methodist - they goof around too much in church for my tastes, anyways. ;)

...And... I agree on the jobs thing. We need to make it lucrative for EVERY American company to pull those jobs OUT of any foreign country and bring them home. THEN, we need to lock the door, build a wall or two and let the rest of the world fend for themselves.

Man, I am so TIRED of this. So, SO tired...but I’m kind of mean, that way. ;)

While rebuilding our stock piles of napalm, we need to rebuild stock piles of cluster munitions or buy the really neat ones Russia makes as well as investing in new thermobaric warhead tech.

ISIS maybe, but Estrogen is still holding Incirlik hostage so the New Ottoman Empire will be a bit more diffficult.

Absolutely. That's one of the easier fixes with reduced corporate regulations and taxes and union excess. I'm not a macro-economist, but understand companies needing to be competitive for their very existence. If that means going elsewhere to avoid the crushing Fedgov and Unions, they do so and have for decades.

We now we have the highest corporate taxes of most nations on the planet, if not the highest. That doesn't include stifling regulations that hamstring business from the Mom&Pops to the conglomerates. I've owned 3 small businesses and can read a Balance Sheet plus a Profit&Loss statement better than most. I understand the bottom line.

Private and public companies exist to make a profit for their owners and/or stockholders. Maybe some benevolent companies are about providing jobs, but most aren't and even then it's a secondary consideration with the Zuckerberg types whose companies profits are beyond obscene.

It's our free-enterprise system from the start that has made us the envy of the World. We simply need to return to those capitalist ideals and get Fedgov/State out of the way. Remember, when Ronald Reagan pushed through reduced regulation on all companies, the economy took off for years!

My poor Dear Lady, I feel so bad for you. All is wearing on my heart and mind, also. America is not the Country I served 11 years in Navy. It makes little since anymore.

Here's a hope: Although I was not a Trump supporter because of his in-articulate speeches and gaffes, I've come to believe he is genuine and truly wants to, "Make America Great Again". He may not fulfill every promise while in because Congress, but he will do what he can with his background of putting the BEST people in place. That's my hope...it could be yours. Hope is all we have now.
