High Doses of Fish Oil Might Help Healing After Heart Attack
US News and World Report ^ | Aug. 1, 2016 | James Bernstein

Heart attack patients who took high doses of fish oil supplements for six months showed improved heart function and less scarring, researchers report.

It is not yet precisely known how the large amounts of omega-3 fatty acids in these supplements might have helped the healing process, but the results are encouraging, said study senior author Dr. Raymond Kwong. He is director of cardiac magnetic resonance imaging at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.

In his study, 360 heart attack survivors were followed for six months. Half of them were given 4 grams of omega-3 fatty acid supplements daily for six months, while the other half were given placebo pills.

I think that something that might help and isn't going to hurt, is worth trying.

Of course recommend that everyone decide for themselves, discuss it with their doctor, etc.

This sounds like... fish oil!

There’s been a lot of claims and counterclaims about fish oil. Personally, I love oily fish. But I remember reading about things like the omega-3 to omega-6 ratio. It’s hard to think the last word is in on this.

I was talking to a doctor at the gym who is big on nutrition. He laughed when I asked him if he could remember how many times coffee had been switched from the “good for you” to “bad for you” category and back again.

My blood pressure inexplicably shot up last fall. I tried many “natural “ cures and none worked. When I told my endocrinologist I took fish oil he said it doesn’t provide any benefits and just adds more calories to my diet. I was quite surprised, until that I had heard only positive things about fish oil.

A few extra calories don’t bother me, my weight is fine. Heart disease runs in my family so I will continue to take fish oil.

Eat your Cod liver oil, it’s been Mama’s recommendation for decades.

And maybe there’s a good reason for it.

A few years ago I asked my cardiologist, who’s a senior staff member at 3 of the world’s most famous hospitals (Boston)...and at Harvard Medical School...about fish oil and he dismissed it outright.

If people want healing after a HA they need to take co enzyme q 10. Countless studies prove it’s amazing ability to help heal hearts.

The article talks about a cardiologist at UCLA, who said that previous studies with lower doses were inconclusive about the benefits, but this one showed improvement with the 4 g.

Yes. I read they did a lot of studies with CoQ10 in Japan and all showed benefits to the heart — you don’t have to wait for a heart attack to take it.

Read up on magnesium - especially the oil, which you can make from flakes and rub on transdermally. Amazing effects, all positive.

Forget the oil.

High doses of Hawthorn berries, and hot peppers will both prevent attacks, and heal the heart.

Anyone that has heart issues should be carrying a strong tincture of capsaicin and add it to their drinking water all the time.

Yes. CO Q 10 is amazing. I take Schiff Megared 3 in 1 (Omega 3, Krill, COQ10). Expensive and rationed but amazing.

There have been a number of studies in the last couple years stating fish oil had no benefits. Dosage and purity are key, in particular EPA OMEGA 3. DHA omega 3 which over the counter fish oil company's hype along with EPA is less beneficial if not negatively effecting EPA Benefits.

Amarin company which markets Vescepa for high trigs in competition with Lovaza is in Phase 3 study using Vescepa. (It is pure EPA, no DHA) to determine if it can reduce Cardiac events. If it does it is billion dollar drug. Not to surprising the FDA is making them jump through hoops. Just another corrupt Gov. agency bought off by the interests of BIG pharmy which Amarin isn't.

I heard about Hawthorn berries, but not about capsaicin for the heart.

People need to check and watch their own reactions.

Magnesium is excellent for the heart as well as the mineral selenium. I take fish oil. I’d rather gain a few pounds.
