Could I pay extra to have the high performance when I start the engine?
“What is DEF?”
Diesel Emission Fluid - it’s out there on the web. Basically an employee urinates into a container, they throw some blue dye in, and sell it to lower emissions. Well, maybe not quite, but it does work, from what I understand and I think it’s the only way to get any diesel vehicle now to pass emissions.
Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) is a non-hazardous solution, which is 32.5% urea and 67.5% de-ionized water. DEF is sprayed into the exhaust stream of diesel vehicles to break down dangerous NOx emissions into harmless nitrogen and water.
Have a nice day.
Pretty simple answer: either test properly, or get rid of the regulation. The university that found the cheating tested properly under real world conditions. The official government testers did not. For that they need to be fired.

The systems passed the specified tests, and thereby met the specs.
“They were great cars regarding global warming (due to their sipping of fuel)...but getting them clean enough to make Los Angeles happy on a bad day simply wasnt humanly possible - so no more diesels (at least low-end diesels) for Americans.”
The EPA standards are insanely stupid. It is passenger mile emmissions that matter, not parts per million.
So outlaw vehicles that get great passenger mile emissions, but put out a few percent more parts per million. Insanely stupid, typical EPA.
I agree with that. VW should be compensated by the government for damage to their reputation.
Not even close to the govenments job. No more than their job of educating (indoctrinating) children, ensuring jobs, providi g healthcare, or controlling the economy (the keynsian lie).
Vw cheated against a silly requirement. There isn’t a gearhead dubber that didn’t feel a bump in performance at the 22 min mark. A tuner or hard driver would surely know this timeframe and ensure the car was warm ahead of time.

If NOx were a problem we would pick #3. But it is not, it is a fake problem.
I take walks every damn day where there is traffic. I don't want to be breathing in this crap. I want to be able to breathe reasonably clean air, and I know what it's like where there are weak or no emissions laws. US emission regs are not nutty at all.
Mine is limited to 165
What were the fines for Election Cheating?
Hmmmm? If you are in CA you are not living under US emissions regs you are living under CARB regs and they aren’t the same.
Somewhere in this conversation “catch 22” ought to be mentioned.
Exactly. A friend in SW Texas has a badass Mazda diesel 4x4 on the family ranch. Apparently, it is not allowed on road.
Having a hard time appreciating the violations...
“This is so gay. There is nothing whatsoever wrong with these cars except for nutty US laws.”

That’s what I thought. The way it was originally being reported you’re led to believe that VW’s are just pumping out a little more CO2 than they should. And that it’s meaningless EPA and treehugger laws that are being violated, but that’s not actually the case.
These engines put out 6 times the legal limit of nitrous oxides, an actual pollutant.
I’m a VW fan, but this was a dishonest thing to do, and actually harms air quality.
Diesel Exhaust Fluid
(urea / water mix), known in the powertrain biz as “cow piss”
Yes I was in the UK and Ireland for three weeks in June.
I’d say their fleet is about 50% diesel.
155 mph = 250kph , German/European automakers chose that to avoid top speed wars ... everything but the baddest hotrods are so limited there...
HD Truck engines used to be tested at various test points of a combination of % rated speed and torque and a weighted summation of those points calculated. As useage in the real world varies tor all sorts of reasons, this type of testing makes more sense. It also makes it difficult for academics to drive uphill into a headwind all day and note that mass/distance outputs don’t meet the test lab numbers.
