Concealed-carry permit holders are nearly the most law-abiding demographic of Americans, a new report by the Crime Prevention Research Center says—comparing the permit holders foremost with police.
“Indeed, it is impossible to think of any other group in the U.S. that is anywhere near as law-abiding,” says the report, titled “Concealed Carry Permit Holders Across the United States 2016.”

I would venture to propose that CCW holders are more lawful statistically than that of LEO of all flavors.

It was easier to get a TS/SCI clearance 50+ years ago in the Navy than a C&C permit in California in spite of zero criminal activity since then.

Yet the ant-gun lobby still clings to the fantasy that law abiding gun owners will be shooting people over fender benders and parking spaces.
I'd have to disagree. They don't have to do anything in particular to "keep their good record intact". They(we) are simply not criminals, and are inherently unlikely to do something that would besmirch their character.

Real answer: In some states (Michigan, Ohio, and others,) it is mandatory to inform the officer immediately upon first contact if you are exercising your second amendments rights. In other states you do not have to inform unless directly asked.
If you are not armed, there is no legal obligation to inform the officer of the existence of your license in any state. However, it will be my practice that if I’m ever stopped but not carrying, I will let the officer know that I’m not, because he probably already knows I have a CPL from running my plates.

Ditto on Yo-Yo’s response. Texas is one of the states where you need to hand over your CHL with your DL if you’re pulled over while carrying.
My advice:
1) Be polite, always.
2) Have your car shut off, radio off, window down, license, registration and insurance card at the ready, and your hands on the top of the steering wheel where they are easily visible to the officer.
3) If you’re not carrying, let the officer know that - don’t wait until he/she asks.
4) If you are carrying, DON’T EVER reach for the gun until given explicit permission to do so.
All of this is about common sense and simple human decency and respect. These folks don’t have an easy job, and anything that you can do to put them at ease about you makes it more likely that you’ll get a warning (instead of a gun in your face). MOST cops (at least here in TX) tend to be more kindly disposed to CHL holders, knowing that we’ve all been vetted by the FBI and the TX equivalent. They also know that you have the license before they get out of their car (assuming that you’re in a car registered to you).
