More than 70 Republicans have signed a letter to the party's National Committee head urging him to stop helping Donald Trump's campaign.

They said Mr Trump's "divisiveness" and "incompetence" risked drowning the party in November's election.

The letter said that the party should instead focus on protecting vulnerable candidates in elections to the Senate and the House of Representatives.

Many GOP elites really want to see Hillary elected, which is no surprise since they feed out of the same trough as she does.

The NeverTrumpers hope to kill two birds with one stone by trying to hamstring Trump: first, if Trump loses, it's a clear message from the GOP to the grassroots activists and voters saying "Don't even try to run non-establishment candidates who we don't vet for you next time." Second, with Hillary in office, the GOP elites can go back to playing their role of a fake and completely impotent opposition to Democratic policies. Having Democrats in office lets the GOP elites do their loyal opposition griping and pose as defenders of conservatism, while accomplishing absolutely nothing.

And when Trump stops headlining GOP fund raisers, they’ll come crawling back. He’s the ONLY draw.

I don’t get it.

So it’s ok with these guys to let Hillary get elected. It’s ok to let Hillary build on the executive powers taken by Obama. It’s ok to let Hillary pack the courts, including the Supreme Court, with younger radical liberal judges, who will always vote for the liberal cause before them.

I can’t believe it’s ok with them to let Hillary become president and let us see four to eight more years of the Obama revolution take place.

Actions like this will end the Republican party.

What will happen if Trump is successful and wins? He would have the right to diminish those who did this to him.

They'll still have Jeb Bush as their write-in candidate, and he's always a big draw at rallies and fundraisers. /sarc>

Ever notice how many of these letters and petitions are by “formers”. Former advisor, former representative, former Senator, etc.

Question, if there advice is so damn good, then why is their status “former”? Why are they out of power? Hmmmm.

Your thinking as a true American. They are thinking of themselves.

Follow the money. Even with Hillary in, they will benefit from the corrupt system.

Because they think they can take a copy of the letter to Hillary and apply for a job when she becomes President. After all, they owe her. And they need to pay the mortgage on their Ward three houses [The first and last good article that David Brooks ever wrote].

A record 14 million republicans voted for Trump.

I think that even people who didn’t vote for Trump are disgusted by Republicans who refuse to support the party’s nominee. They’re basically giving the finger to Republican voters, saying “Your opinion doesn’t matter and your votes don’t matter. Only our opinion counts, and we your betters get to pick the candidates for you.” Just like the DNC rigged things for Hillary from the get-go.

They are liars and hypocrites!!! IF they really cared about the down ballot candidates, they would have fulfilled their oaths and worked with the Trump campaign, and ALL the real live people who supported him and are voting for him, to elect the first Republican President in years. But NO!!! They want a candidate that will lose legitimately, like Republicans are supposed to do, so they can keep their personal power and associates safely in place for another four years -— who cares what happens to the Country in the mean time. There is no honor among them -— and they, and ALL of their extended family members, must NEVER again receive the public trust.

All of these assh*les are looking for a scapegoat to blame when fed-up voters kick their useless butts out of office. I say good riddance to all of them. GO TRUMP, AND STOMP THEIR ASSES GOOD ON YOUR WAY TO THE WHITE HOUSE.

That's because you're thinking of the GOP as a party of certain principles, which GOP politicians adhere to.

I firmly believe that for many politicians, the decision of which party to join is a career decision, rather than one of principle. They ask themselves, "Which party, in my state, am I likely to be able to have a career in? WHo are my contacts? What are the election prospects?" Party principles are secondary to career and earning opportunities.

"More government" = "bigger gravy train" is the calculation going on here.

I recognized a few names in the politico list, but it contained many, many mid-level party apparatchiks. Who are they? Are they important? I have no idea.

But one thing is clear - “The Party” has its own opinions and interests, often very different from the average Republican voter (and certainly different from Conservatives).

And you wonder why I really do think Trump loves the term Uniparty, because he knows that's how Washington, DC works.

I’d like to see this list of names too. I’m sure the story is true, since GOP establishment luminaries like Mitt Romney and Jeb Bush have more or less said that same thing already. Then they throw a tantrum when Trump and his supporters won’t endorse their candidates of choice.
