The union employee does have a direct pay to the union as dues but medical, vacation and retirement are also paid indirectly. The union then provides those benefits but are part of the payroll package paid by the employer.

Not so in my case. I worked under a non contribulatory pension plan. My former employer pays me directly. Large employer, with one of the healthiest pension funds in the country, they haven’t missed a beat in the 17 years I’ve been retired. I believe the plan is something like 140% funded. They also provide my family’s health plan. When I die, my family will continue to have health insurance and my wife will receive either 60% or 70% of my monthly check, I’m not sure which.

The only thing I get from the union is a monthly news letter.

From personal observation for more than 30 years, many, many union members arte conservative, especially when it comes to the second amendment.

The more Hillary threatens to take our guns away, the more votes she loses.

We do have adequate infrastructure in most of the country. Though we do logically require more infrastructure than places like HK or Japan to generate the same amount of wealth per capita. Our population is much more spread out, so we need more roads for goods and people than they do. I will say that roads in and around some metro areas are congested to the point that it’s hindering commerce, and the free market isn’t really offering much in the way of solutions there.

One other area that needs improvement is internet connectivity in rural areas. It’s hindering productivity, and making it more difficult for people here to take part in the information economy. The private sector doesn’t really have any financial incentives to bring it up to standards.

We have plenty of universities, too. Though most of the ones we have are dysfunctional because the faculties are populated by ideologues and cynical opportunists who couldn’t care less what happens to their students once they graduate. We probably need to stop subsidizing things like gender/ethnic grievance departments and wannabe social justice crusaders. The sixties were a long time ago, and they haven’t gotten the memo yet.

And who knows how the gov’t really spends the infrastructure money they supposedly allocate.
