I keep asking this question, maybe you can explain it: Why, if tariffs cripple an economy, every other country in the world maintains theirs?
Why don’t all the countries get together and joyfully shred every tariff law on the books if such laws are so bad for their respective countries?
Are tariff laws only bad for the people of the United States alone?
Most of the populations of other countries don’t have the disposable income to buy American products.
“Profit margins”, driven down by the feds, are what is driving business out of this country.
Explain how profit margins keep Nabisco from moving out by putting tariffs on Carrier air conditioners.
Trump is basing his projections of Mexico “paying” for the wall by expecting enough import tariffs which American distributors and consumers will actually pay.
They do not need to send money. We send $hundreds of millions in foreign aid to Mexico. Trump could just say “All that foreign aid you are used to getting? All of it will go to the Wall, instead”.
Thus, effectively, the money would come out of Mexico’s pocket, whether they like it or not.
I’ve thought about it more than you have my FRiend. I am an advocate of the free market economy because it works. Sending up who’s for and who’s against does not move me in the slightest. I couldn’t care less who’s for it and who’s against it. There’s a lot of people out there who are confused about economics and specifically how the free market economy is freedom in action. The market economy, free of government interference, is how America became the strongest, wealthiest, greatest nation on earth.

In simple terms, because they are as confused as we are. Protectionist tariffs are like shooting yourself in the foot. It penalizes the consumers of the country putting up the tariffs by forcing them to pay more for the same product. The idea of of economic retaliation by putting up tariffs is like saying, "Well if you shoot yourself in the foot, so will I". Really dumb.
If this is all the anti-Trump msm has then, they have nothing.
Talk about making a mountain out of a mole hill, what did the media expect, that the Mex Prez would volunteer to pay??

It rewards domestic production, which creates jobs and general prosperity.

It’s nice to know that you have a crystal ball which shows you Trump’s planning and thinking. I expect Trump to use a multitude of approaches to pay for the wall which will in no way be onerous to anyone. Beside all that, why is Mexico allowed high taxes on cars and refrigerators among other things, but America isn’t allowed a tariff? You are EXTREMELY
limited in your understanding of how successful economies work. Limited thinking is soooooo tiresome. Try to find some other soapbox.
Financiers are not necessarily interested in maintaining a free market economy because that would mean more competition for them. They are the “establishment” that like the status quo. Special interests are very big on government interference to help them. Same as it ever was. The free market helps everyone but especially the little guy, the average American, and those wanting the opportunity to start their own business. The free market is the enemy of the unions, the special interests, and government.
The discussion was about tariffs, not free markets. Free market labor in the United States, with its emphasis on humanitarianism and the resulting legally binding and sometimes costly restrictions necessary to enforce the principle, cannot compete with other countries that virtually employ slave labor which dramatically lowers cost.
Also, keep in mind that most of the history of the world is a story of oppression, not freedom. Very few periods in the long, sad history of man have seen a society that was actually free. America in the 1800’s is such an example. America is truly an exceptional nation.
Maybe you weren’t paying attention, but Trump’s main point all along about paying for the wall has been through charging tariffs. Other than that, you don’t seem to know what you’re talking about.
Tariffs are interference with the market economy. The free market economy is defined as the market economy FREE from government interference. So when you are talking about tariffs, you ARE talking about interference in the market economy.

That is not the way reality is. There are plenty of accomplished individuals who would not agree that your point has been settled.
