Swiss fear EU effort to tighten gun control could disarm law-abiding citizens

Swiss gun rights proponents fear a new European Union measure to tighten gun control could disarm thousands of law-abiding citizens, Reuters reports.

The proposed gun restrictions which Switzerland, a non-EU member, would be obliged to implement under cross border agreements, has raised hackles among the Swiss, who resent intervention from Brussels, the news wire reported.

It also comes at a time of increased tensions between Switzerland and the EU over Swiss efforts to curb immigration.

Christopher Blocher, a leading voice of the Swiss right, told Reuters Switzerland should end its participation in the system of passport-free travel if the tighter gun restrictions are defeated in a referendum.

Why is there a problem?

They are a sovereign country.

And I thought the EU was formed for financial reasons.

Simply rescind any agreements, if necessary.

They never Swentered to Swexit, but treaty agreements could force Switzerland to adopt EU restrictions anyway.

You are correct, Switzerland still circulates the Swiss Franc as their national currency, and have treaty arrangements.

Could they rescind the treaty?

So nullify the treaty agreements. Every country in Europe, whether in the EU or not should always do what is in the best interests of its own citizens.

The organization of the Swiss military REQUIRES the head of EVERY citizen household have available and in serviceable condition, at least one modern firearm and sufficient ammunition to mount a defense everywhere in the entire country. Depending on the circumstances, there may be SEVERAL members of the Swiss Army Reserve living in the same household, and all are required to have access to small arms to be used in national defense.

One of the reasons why it is so hard for outsiders to gain Swiss citizenship if they are not of direct descent along the patriarch line of some male Swiss ancestor, it is usually not considered by the Swiss Parliament. The right to citizenship does not past through the matriarch descent.

Even the Nazis of Germany and the Fascists of Italy could not hope to succeed against the national will of the Swiss.

And you thought the NRA came up with the pledge of “prying the weapons out of my cold dead hands”.

The Swiss have a much longer view of history.

Switzerland isn't part of the EU, but it is part of the Schengen Agreement, allowing visa-less travel with most of the EU and Norway and Iceland.

There are no border checks between Switzerland and Germany, France, Italy, Austria, and Liechtenstein.

And the idea that their subjects can travel to places where guns can be legally purchased scares Brussels silly.

A relevant quote for this situation:

"The Second Amendment is a doomsday provision, one designed for those exceptionally rare circumstances where all other rights have failed - where the government refuses to stand for reelection and silences those who protest; where courts have lost the courage to oppose, or can find no one to enforce their decrees. However improbable these contingencies may seem today, facing them unprepared is a mistake a free people get to make only once. " Alex Kozinski (b. 1950) US 9th Circuit Court, 2003

Complete BS. The Euro-weenies couldn’t disarm a boy with a toy sword. This is typical bullsh*t from the bed-wetters at Faux News. A battalion of whatever (cub scouts, ducks, pencil erasers, Bill Gate’s apologists) would totally annihilate the EU bureaucrat wimps in five minutes or less.
