A swarm of earthquakes that rattled the Salton Sea area earlier this week has increased the probability of a major quake hitting Southern California.
The California Office of Emergency Services (OES) issued an earthquake advisory warning residents and officials in Ventura, San Diego, San Bernardino, Riverside, Orange, Los Angeles, Kern and Imperial counties that there was a greater possibility of a major earthquake through Oct. 4.

The swarm occurred in a region known as the Brawley seismic zone, which is located near a fault network that connects the southernmost end of the San Andreas fault with the Imperial fault.
Scientists say some of the cross-faults are positioned to potentially add stress to the San Andreas fault and the San Jacinto fault system when they rupture.
According to the USGS, preliminary data indicated a roughly one percent chance of a magnitude 7 or greater earthquake being triggered on the Southern San Andreas fault within the next seven days “with the likelihood decreasing over time.”

They can’t predict earthquakes but they can predict that the chances of them decreasing over time??? I thought earthquakes are the result of the increase in pressure over some time until it pops...

I am in Oregon but plan to get some lawn mower gas today in sympathy.
there are a number of faults there so it isnt just a pressure release on just one of them, potentially.

You’re not out of the woods unless you’re way far inland. The Pacific Northwest could suffer a more damaging earthquake than California.

The big fear is that once the SA does let go it won't be a localized quake, but instead will 'unzip' all the way from the Salton Sea to Monterey.

You might be more concerned with a huge earthquake caused by a failure of the Cascadia plate, followed by a 100- foot high tsunami. Good luck!

There would have to be three separate zips for a complete unzipping: Salton to Landers, Landers to Fort Tejon, and Fort Tejon to Monterey. A big enough quake could unzip Salton to Landers, but it could take years, decades or even centuries for the next unzipping to Fort Tejon to take place.
Bush’s fault.
Salton Sea is shallow, so it’ll split open down the middle of the fault line and Cthulhu will rise out of the maw and begin wreaking havoc on the... oh, wait, that area’s pretty much a desolate wasteland already. Never mind.

There were several earthquake swarms further north in the Owens Valley a few years ago. (Late 1999 I believe.)
But where several fault zones cross each other, a swarm of small quakes could relieve pressure on all of them, or increase it against the final line that has not moved.
What’s the problem? If the legislature can ban cow farts, surely they can ban earthquakes.
