SAN ANTONIO Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, speaking at a Tuesday fundraiser here, continued to call out members of his own party for not being fully supportive of him, including U.S. House Speaker Paul Ryan, whom he accused of "total disloyalty to the party."
Trump promised to "fight like hell" until Nov. 8 but expressed frustration with resistance in his own party especially from Ryan, who announced Monday he would focus on down-ballot races in the home stretch to Election Day. Trump sharply contrasted his approach to the final weeks with that of the last GOP presidential ticket which, he noted, included Ryan.
"I think they forgot that there was an election because something happened in the last month where you didn't see them, right?" Trump said according to audio of the event obtained by The Texas Tribune. "You didn't see them. I said, 'Why aren't they on the shows? Why aren't they all over the place?'"
Earlier in his remarks, Trump said occasionally "our own party gets in the way" of his campaign. "Sometimes it's harder to beat our own party than it is to beat the person on the other side," Trump told donors.
Trump previewed that message earlier Tuesday on Twitter, railing against Ryan as a "very weak and ineffective leader." Trump kept up the criticism at the fundraiser, suggesting Ryan should focus more on budget issues than on criticizing the GOP nominee and even reaching back to Ryan's time as Republican Mitt Romney's running mate in the 2012 presidential race.
"This guy lost four years ago," Trump said, "in, like, a landslide."
Trump also tweeted Tuesday that the "shackles have been taken off me and I can now fight for America the way I want to." At the fundraiser, Trump repeated the line, suggesting he feels more untethered from the Republican establishment than ever following Ryan's announcement Monday.
"It feels so good," Trump told donors.
Trump spoke for roughly 15 minutes at the fundraiser, which was held at the Grand Hyatt hotel in downtown San Antonio. Notable attendees included Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, who chairs Trump's efforts in Texas, and Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller.
Personally, I think ryan is a PUSSY. I understand the truth hurts sometimes.
Our party is the people on the other side.
They do not know how to win. Mr. Trump will teach them how !!!
Ryan will fight. For his Obamacare exemption. But he’ll never fight for Main Street. Ever.
That should be his new first name. We can call him Pussy RYNO.
Ryan’s wife is a full-on Dem.
They live in the same house.
Damn straight. The birth of the Patriot or America First Party begins now!
Damn straight. The birth of the Patriot or America First Party begins now!
Hopefull everybody voting for Trump in Wisconsin will be voting against Ryan on November 8th.
The GOPe prefer Hillary Criminal to the 14 million GOP voters who picked Trump. The party will not recover from this betrayal if Trump is not able to win.
Paul Rino is an assclown obviously working for the other side.
Rumour is on CNBC that Ryan will throw in on a billion dollar porkulus with Hillary!
What purpose does attacking Ryan serve? Or more precisely, why not just attack Hillary 24x7 and get the media to cover that instead of giving them the opportunity to cover the distraction instead?
“Disloyalty to the Party” is the wrong message.
Trump should be calling Ryan out on his disloyalty to the Country, which is evidenced by his clear decision to help Hillary.
See my tagline.
Has he ever crossed Obama like this?
Pray America wakes
Yes! A hybrid creature to be sure.
“The party will not recover from this betrayal if Trump is not able to win.”
Totally true.
I’m a Trump man, but I’m done voting for republicans.
Paul Ryan is a dirty little shirt.
