The Motorcycle Diaries is not a coming-of-age story as it has been described by a number of commentators.
When Che Guevara took off on a motorcycle journey across South America he was not a teenager; he was 23-years-old and therefore already of age. In my view, this book has nothing to do with coming-of-age issues, rather it is a hippie discovers communism kind of story.
The Che Guevara that we meet in The Motorcycle Diaries is a hippie who drifts from place to place without any coherent plan. He is alienated from society. He sees the ill effects of materialism and repression in every direction. He thinks that it is the responsibility of other people to provide him with food, shelter, and even booze. He has no sense of hygieneat times he does not wash for days and is inclined to live in most filthy and hopeless conditions. He is incapable of making any effort to improve the quality of his life.
In late 1951, Che Guevara and his friend, 29-year-old Alberto Granado, set off on the motorcycle they call La Poderosa (The Powerful One) with no aim but to wander aimlessly across South America. During their journey of more than 8000 kilometres lasting many months, they behave like a pair of filthy freeloaders and create chaos and nuisance for everyone who puts up with them. Quite often, they end up dirtying the living environment of their clueless hosts.

I have a shirt that has Hitler on it and it says ‘my Che shirt is in the wash.’
The movie was a farce. When he treated a patient he was very caring and professional. His medical expertise was butcher-like.
He was a monster before this when he was a wealthy son in Latin America who could sexually use and abuse the help at will.
Mike Tyson has a tattoo of che. Che haTed blacks.
Greatest thing I’ve heard for awhile....LOL.
So typical of leftist hippies and hipsters... just below the surface beats the heart of totalitarian monsters. Witness your special snowflakes on college campii today.
I did the same thing in 64, rode my motorcycle from Oregon to Chile, Brazil, and back. Then up to the NY World Fare. Voted for Goldberg. Trip made me appreciate good ole Capitalism!
The movie was beautifully photographed.
Beyond that there is nothing to recommend it.
“I did the same thing in 64, rode my motorcycle from Oregon to Chile, Brazil, and back.”
She’s Grandparents were wealthy makers of luxury Yachts who moved from the USA to Argentina.
I’ll bet you didn’t know that, huh.
The also didn’t like Mexicans or blacks.
When he was an adolescent he was outspoken about his love of humping their impoverished housemaid.
The movie was another for romantics. Sad to say it got good reviews form the naive critics.
He sees the ill effects of materialism and repression in every direction.Meanwhile, Marx was an ardent materialistthe belief that all that exists is matter and nothing supernatural exists, and also the rejection of anything spiritual in favor of accumulation of physical things.
I LAMO anytime I see a black guy wearing a Che shirt...Che hated blacks and wanted all of them dead. Ignorance is bliss, eh?
The only reason Marxists have had success is that there are a lot of humans out there living under various forms of feudal serfdom of not outright slavery thanks to their ruling class oligarchs and right wing puppet tin horn dictators propped up by police trained at the School of the Americas and other imperialist infrastructure. America has become an oligarch empire run by neocon sociopaths. Trump will break the back of this criminal mafia enterprise.
Amazon.com has them.
I love walking up to the little snowflakes and asking why they are so homophobic.
Melt downs have occurred.
and before AdvRider no less..
Real name: Ernesto Lynch, Jr. His father fancied himself a revolutionary and was kicked out of Ireland because the Irish didn’t want Marxist revolution. He grew up in a wealthy family steeped in Marx, Engels & co. His father bought him a motorcycle and advised him to make a revolutionary journal about the trip around South and Central America. The plan from the start was that Ernesto Jr.(Che was his revolutionary name)would become a revolutionary leader.
His co-revolutionaries in Cuba have noted that for a doctor, he loved killing. It excited him and before ever seeing combat, he had already executed 9 men. The Guerrillirco photo was created by a Marxist, Alberto Korda, after 146 tries and much work over the negative in his lab.
Somebody needs to put this into Wikipedia.
