Booz Allen Hamilton said on Thursday it had hired a former FBI chief to conduct an external review of its security practices, after the consulting firm learned for the second time in three years that an employee working under contract with the National Security Agency had been charged with stealing classified information.

Booz Allen, which earns billions of dollars a year contracting with U.S. intelligence agencies, has come under renewed scrutiny in recent weeks after authorities took Harold Thomas Martin into custody.

The firm also employed Edward Snowden, who leaked a trove of secret files to news organizations in 2013 that exposed vast domestic and international surveillance operations carried out by the NSA. Snowden, who was in Hong Kong when his disclosures surfaced, lives in Moscow under asylum.

This line in the article is what caught my eye:

Prosecutors have alleged he spent more than two decades pilfering secret documents and hoarding them at his home in Maryland, where investigators said they seized at least 50 terabytes of data.

Why was he hording info for that long? What was he going to do with that info? What has he done with that info?

Info hoarding... less smelly than cat hoarding.

He’s probably a little touched in the head, like mailmen who steal/hoard mail. There are some very “unique personalities” in that line of work.

Fifty terabytes going back over twenty years? Sounds like he was a data hoarder who could not bear to destroy anything. Not excusing what he did but I bet it was 98% useless information.

98% of it was about yoga classes and some girl’s wedding plans.

I rather suspect that was the totality of data files in his home. Heck, between my wife and I, we have over 30 TB of storage. . . .

As for Booz, I rather suspect that the guy is an Associate, or MAYBE a Lead Associate, that is to day, a senior worker bee. The higher grades a Booz are pretty much 24/7 business development.

I’m former Booz myself, the “biz dev or die” attitude is one of the main reasons I’m FORMER Booz Allen. . . .

I applied for a Security job with BAH in Maryland. I was soon glad they turned me down, or I would probably have know Snowden before he scarpered.

He was in my division, but Cyber Ops was several hundred across the DC area: I remember the name from emails. Never met or talked to him. . .
