Poll: National Anthem Protests Leading Cause For NFL Ratings Drop
CBS ^

BOSTON (CBS) — There are many reasons why the NFL’s ratings are down in 2016. You may be dismissive of the very idea that the backlash to the national anthem protests, sparked by the 49ers’ Colin Kaepernick, has played a role in the NFL’s TV ratings, which have dropped by about 12 percent year-over-year. To continue to dismiss that is to blatantly ignore legitimate data on the subject.

A fresh poll from Seton Hall surveyed 841 adults across the U.S. Each respondent was asked to identify seven separate factors as a reason for the NFL ratings drop, allowing them to answer “yes” or “no” for each of them. The leading factor, according to the poll, was the national anthem protests, which scored “yes” at a rate of 56 percent.

Other answers also scored “yes” at a high rate, including 50 percent of “yeses” for coverage of the presidential election, 47 percent for the league’s handling of domestic violence cases, 44 percent for the over-saturation of the market, 39 percent for increased interest in postseason baseball, and 33 percent for controversy over head injuries and player safety.

Interestingly enough, the lowest score, tied with player safety at 33 percent, was “a decline in quality of play on the field.” Many would cite this as the overriding factor to all of this, and it certainly is factoring in. It’s easier to turn the games off for other reasons if the games aren’t fun to watch in the first place.

Kaepernick surely disgusted me and my respect for the NFL.

They should have talked to all of those protestors and told them no standee, no paycheckee.

I laugh so hard at them. I hope they lose everything and everyone. THEY forgot who was paying their bills.

If you read any other analysis or listen to sports talk, they list every other reason for the decline in ratings and ignore or dismiss the protests as the cause. Sports media is very liberal as well, so they would never want to honestly discuss this.

And the only reason he started all of this is because he was benched. Racism didn’t seem to be a topic of concern for him when he was the Niners starting QB leading them to two NFC championship games and one Super Bowl, and when he signed that six year contract extension for well over a hundred million.

Heard the NBA is gonna pull the same crap!! On one of the opening night games the lady sing the national anthem had a T-shirt saying black lives matter and was told to take off the T-shirt and the basketball players were enraged! That didn’t even make the news... Watch out for it.... it’s coming it’s coming! I hope my beloved Spurs don’t pull a stunt like that!!

I thought the reason the NFL ratings are down was due to the flooding in Dalhart, TX, or some other lame excuse.

Takes a lot of gonads by the MSM to actually get to the truth.

And the fact no thanks to bad offensive line play, the play quality of the NFL this season literally sucks like a Hoover vacuum cleaner.

We've seen too many bad games on Sunday, Monday and Thursday nights--and the commentators are really straining to defend last Sunday night's gigantic debacle of a game, too.

they tried to end football by saying it was too dangerous. that didn’t work

having the NFL endorse unpatriotic behavior is their next move... which is working

Every game he does this, penalize his team 45 yards for his conduct as soon as they get the ball.

The NBA have at least have the advantage of HINDSIGHT and can see what happens to their money stream when you force your paying customers to have to attended a lecture on how racist they supposedly are. And hopefully they understand that it will be worse for the NFL next year when they come around begging for season ticket renewals.

Now whether the NBA owners have the guts to step up and nip this garbage in the bud is the open question. So far, with this spoiled lady being rejected from singing the National Anthem, it’s a good start. But the REAL TEST will be when the players start to act up.

The Kaepernick situation served to reinforce our suspicions. The handling of domestic abuse, the silly wearing of pink for breast cancer, criminal thugs given way too many chances, head injuries being handled by the dictates of public relations, the suspensions instead of permanent expulsions for drug use have all been bad news. But this Kaepernick situation? It was proof positive that the NFL doesn’t have a clue or concern of what the fans want and expect from the NFL.
