In 1979 Pope John Paul II was a clear leader for the entire year. He became Pope in October 1978, and within a few months had made a pilgrimage to Mexico, back to Poland where he captured the hearts of his countrymen and challenged the Communist government to reform. With Lech Walensa, they brought a new spirit to Poland which caught fire.
Time magazine selected the Iyatollah Kameini as Man of the Year.
