Pinehurst, N.C. — A local survivor of Pearl Harbor has spent a lifetime making sure people don't forget the terror that killed so many of his comrades.
Roy "Swede" Boreen, 96, escaped a ship where more than 440 sailors were killed. He has lived in Pinehurst for more than 30 years, and Wednesday the community rallied around him in tribute.
At age 21, Boreen prepared to die a terrible death, coated in oil, bobbing in sea water. Minutes earlier, he'd looked out a porthole aboard the U.S.S. Oklahoma.

Yes - and I had a good cry reading this and listening to this humble yet great man talk about his experiences.
Few of the great ones remain who survived Pearl Harbor, and only they truly know the pain of that day. As for today's "journalists", they can not only just imagine what happened, they also get the facts wrong.
His generation is dying out and the next ones coming up as you say are brainwashed against our great country and it’s love of freedom and victory in War over a ruthless and cruel enemy.

What a grim day that had to be - especially for the survivors but also for our country. We had no way of knowing if we would survive or not...but we did have faith in God and faith in our nation to eventually, after long hard fought battles, win......but it had to be a very scary time.

Our finest traditions are defiled today.
My granddaughter had a music presentation as part of her Middle School’s music program. One of the songs they played was “Tears of Arizona”, a song written about the oil leaking from the Arizona that will do so for many more years. The oil drops represent the tears for the dead and wounded.
It was a very fitting piece of music to play this night.
Her great-grandfather (then an Army private, later a Lt. Col.) was bombed at Schofield Barracks on Dec.7, 1941. I’m willing to bet that out of the over 50-60 children in the band, that she might be the only one who had a relative at Oahu/Pearl Harbor that fateful day, and she knows a little bit more about it then most kids.

Another report about a survivor who got a chance to shoot back at the Japs said that he manned his ship's artillery cannon and began firing...CBS news, I think. I pointed out to Mrs. JimRed that artillery is land-based and mobile, and wondered why nobody in editing caught it. I got a blank look back.
I disagree——those of us who knew America and loved her were sure we would overcome Japan——that is why we went by the thousands to the recruiting offices and signed up to fight the enemy-( I am proud to have been one of them)—folks today will never feel the pride and love of country that was the norm back then—there were few ‘free rides’ then and we were used to working for what little we may have had and no enemy was going to take our freedom away——God Bless those who loved and served America——your existence today was won by those who lived begore you-—cheers
I think that is kind of harsh.
Remember, to the high school graduates of 1941 the End of the Civil war as also about 75 years earlier.
This is ancient American history to the great grand kids of this sailors.
And don’t forget, its the Millenials who have done the heavy lifting over and over and over for the past 15 years. Thats about four times the length of WWII.
In Context, I think the snowflakes are OK.
Now THIS is something worth crying over.
Not just losing an election like Hillary’s supporters are doing.
