Was not a fan of his politics but, damn, I sure admired him as the Marine and astronaut.

John Glenn’s wingman in Korea was Ted Williams. Supposedly Glenn stated he formerly outranked Williams but given William’s was more experienced in combat he let him take the lead.

Just found your post and the beautiful poem which had inspired my first FR account name. I stopped using it in deference to those it honors.

Kindest regards.

Lets see:

Florence Hendersen
Fidel Castro
John Glenn

That’s enough for 2016.

A true military patriot, but a terrible senator.

I sat on the floor in front of a blond colored black-n-white TV watching him fly that Redstone into space.

Live.

The only thing he didn’t do was walk on the Moon. And he should have.

Biggest problem I had with him was when he sold
out his Senate vote for a chance to go back to
space on the shuttle.

Think I’ll go watch my DVD of “The Right Stuff”! Started as one of “The Few, the Proud” then joined an even more rarified band of brothers. I believe that he was the last of the original Seven - God Speed you to your Rest, John!

RIP. Condolences to his family and friends - but they should not be sad, his was a life well led, and long.

To those who didn’t see eye-to-eye with his politics (and I am one of them), take a step back and look at the big picture: this man was a genuine hero - a Marine Corps fighter pilot, and an astronaut who went where no American (and only one other human) had the guts to go before. He was a genuine patriot, on top of being a hero. America is a better nation for him having been one of us, and a poorer nation now that he is gone. I hope that his life and his feats of courage can inspire others.
