Non-compete deal for tunnel may be costly

Virginia's top transportation oversight body voted earlier this month to move ahead with a major tunnel expansion. If everything goes as planned, the multibillion-dollar project could be good news for the traffic-snarled Hampton Roads region when it opens in 2024.

But the commonwealth may also be setting itself up for a major financial body blow - and demonstrating the long-term consequences of mismanaging public-private partnerships.

It’s a shame that Eisenhower used the term “Military-Industrial Complex”. He was making a valid point, but the phrasing made a lot of people think that the problem was focused in the Defense Industry.

In my opinion, the problem is Fascism. If Big Government helps Big Business and in return, Big Business helps Big Government, then you get the problems we see today:

Shady campaign contributions
Shady government contracts
Too much influence from lobbyists
Revolving door between political office and government contracting
Bottomless funds paying for things that we don’t really need
Cronyism

We need a much smaller government.

Eisenhower, in the same speech stated:

(Beware the )“domination of the nation’s scholars by Federal employment, project allocations, and the power of money.”

This article discusses the second warning of Eisenhower regarding the dominance of the “Educational complex” funded by the government and the threat of the Elites to our freedoms.

Websters College Dictionary from ca. 1920 (From memory)

“Fascism; a political system involving government control of business and industry, newspapers and the press, of education, and forcible suppression of dissent.” 20 years later the editor for the entry added “especially from the right.”
