One-third of Californians support Calexit

Reuters has a poll out which found a surprising number of Californians are ready to secede from the union now that Donald Trump is president:

One in every three California residents supports the most populous U.S. state’s peaceful withdrawal from the union, according to a new Reuters/Ipsos opinion poll, many of them Democrats strongly opposed to Trump’s ascension to the country’s highest office.

The 32 percent support rate is sharply higher than the last time the poll asked Californians about secession, in 2014, when one-in-five or 20 percent favored it around the time Scotland held its independence referendum and voted to remain in the United Kingdom.

California also far surpasses the national average favoring secession, which stood at 22 percent, down from 24 percent in 2014.

There is already a move to get Calexit on the ballot in 2019. Here’s a sample of the pitch:

In our view, the United States of America represents so many things that conflict with Californian values, and our continued statehood means California will continue subsidizing the other states to our own detriment, and to the detriment of our children…

In 2016, the United Kingdom voted to leave the international community with their “Brexit” vote. Our “Calexit” referendum is about California joining the international community.

Reuters write up on its poll results does not break the responses down by party but it does indicate the support for secession is especially strong among disillusioned Democrats. It would be interesting to see what percentage of California Democrats are ready to bolt the United States because of Trump.

Of course California isn’t the only state which has flirted with abandoning the U.S. Prior to the election, Public Policy Polling, which often asks gag questions intended to embarrass Republicans, found that 40% of Texans would consider secession if Clinton won the election.

This still sounds like a fringe idea but the numbers suggest a lot of regular people on the right and the left are open to it. If the country continues to polarize, you have to assume the states which represent the far ends of the political continuum—California, Texas and maybe New York—could eventually see this become a majority opinion.

The issue is not only what the majority in CA want but what the feds will allow because CA doesn’t qualify for hostile secession IMO.

They need to take their illegals and their electoral votes and go away. The wall can snake around their east border and it’s a win-win for everyone.

They can leave the country. The land is ours. Plenty of people will be happy to fill it.

California isn’t probably the only State that penalizes the elderly for using electric space heaters to keep warm this frigid Winter, but it is the one we are stuck in, paying out our retirement savings for electricity, and being threatened with higher penalty charges unless we turn off those heaters.

It is ludicrous to even speak of “California” leaving the union.

What is somewhat conceivable is that San Francisco, Los Angeles, and some other communities on the Pacific coastline might separate from California and form a new country.

The majority of the state (in terms of land mass) does not support Leftwing craziness.

I support Calexit, and I don’t live in CA. Let them leave, then we can build a wall around California, to keep their illness from spreading.

Ever notice that the abbreviation for California is CA, and the abbreviation for cancer is also CA?

If the Union is divisible, then California is divisible.

I say let CA go no strings attached because the upside for the rest of the USA would be huge. CA is a huge political ball and chain.

Neo secessionists here notwithstanding, you attempt to secede, you die. Anything less is national suicide, which is what the left is all about. Civil War 101.

Almost half of the land (46%) in California belongs to all of us - the citizens of the USA.

The Calexit people should leave the USA if they want to but the land stays with us right here in the USA.

Ain’t gonna happen folks. Relax your fingers and let that trial balloon just float away. We would need to trade with all these other states. They could slap a tariff on us in California to punish us for doing the bidding of the EPA regardless of how many people lose their jobs. Think about Central Valley, and all those farmers who had no water for their crops because people like Barbara Boxer wanted to protect some fish nobody ever heard of. That’s just one small example of Gov. Brown’s domain. Next; let’s talk about all our Sanctuary Cities, and the funding used to house, feed, insure, hospitalize, counsel, teach , defend and jail all of our undocumented ‘guests’.

I’m all for this. We don’t need 79 liberal electoral votes, we don’t need their $969.5 Billion pension debt, and we certainly do not need Hollywood. The best benefit would be that the democRATS will not win another presidential election for a very long long time.

Go right ahead. There will never be another democrat president the other 49, and you will be a broke Mexican speaking nation.
