If Rex Tillerson is not to become a wartime secretary of state like Colin Powell or Dean Rusk, he is going to have to speak to the Iranians, not with defiant declarations, but in a diplomatic dialogue.

The problem is that Iran is not interested in diplomatic dialogue with the US. At all. Even when they were in the middle of negotians with obama and kerry seeking a deal that would end sanctions and gain them billions from us the mullahs were still leading crowds in chants of "Death to the USA".

This won't end well.

I am very leery of what I am seeing. I don’t mind the sanctions on Iran; however,as long as it is not illegal aggression. I am opposed to overt action in Yemen unless it is requested by the sovereign in place government and then ONLY AGAINST Isis/ AlQaeda. We are not over there to cover for the damned Sunni Saudis!! That is absolute BS.

Iran and Saudi Arabia are both enemies and threats and both need to be dealt with. The problem is Europe lives on Saudi oil. Take that out of the equation and I say let the Saudi’s and Iran have at it and let them know if they hit Israel we will back Israel’s response in full.

Not taking sides one way or another, just found this article:

To clarify in relation to your comment:

>>”It was sobering because that was the moment I realized the Ayatollah Khomenei was right all along when he called the United States of America “the Great Satan.””<<

By “The Great Satan” analogy, he meant “the Great Deceiver”. IRI considers Satan specifically “a Deceiver”.

The mullahs’ regime fully know how they got political power in Iran. It was with the help of Carter that a staunch ally of the US (the Shah) was thrown under the bus because it suited the US (oil, OPEC and Petrodollars preference given to the Saudis), while privately giving all assurances to the Shah that the US was still supportive of him.

In their view, that makes the US a “Deceiver” & ultimately an unreliable ally.

Many of their ‘foreign policy’ actions are based on that conclusion; besides, the entire foundation of the regime is based on being anti-USA, and their relatively small yet vocal/active power-base is drawn from that position too. So, very hard to publicly change it.

Mind you, that also applies to other “foreign governments”. Hence, a big reason for telling the Russians to pack up and leave Hamadan airbase. The Russians made a mistake of being *too public* about having access to the airbase in Iran.

Quickly read through that link.

Again, it says Iran was culpable for 9/11, not based on any direct or hard evidence, but mostly based on questioning and conjecture.

From your link: “That Iran had some sort of hand in the Planes Operation has long been suspected by many insiders..... Iranian intelligence has enjoyed a clandestine relationship with al-Qa’ida going back to the early 1990s, and U.S. intelligence has known of meetings between their leadership and top Tehran spies since 1996.”

Maybe Iran was involved, or maybe not at all.

After all, the Twin Towers were targeted in 1993 too. The person arrested according to what I read had said the Towers will be brought down, eventually. Was he a Taliban member?

I agree with you that we need to learn more.

The bigger questions are:

1) The US, presumably, has a very vast, sophisticated and connected network of intel. Did US intel, which accordingly to posted quote knew about ‘meetings’, not know or have a reasonable clue beforehand about 9/11? If not, why not?

2) Israeli intel is the second most connected one especially in the ME, often sharing info with the US. Jordanians come close. Did the Israelis not at least warn the US about 9/11 & potential terrorist operation in the US? If not, why not? If yes, what info did they pass on?

I understand these things can’t be all discussed & disclosed publicly.

But, it’s hard to believe the US/Israel didn’t have intel about a very notable operation such as 9/11 before it happened? It could well be construed as negligence too to prevent such an attack. Unless they were waiting for Iranian officials to stamp passports of foreign nationals transiting thru Iran as a warning to the US.

>>”I admire General Jim Mattis greatly but apparently, he has harbored some feelings, maybe grudges, on Iran for over 30 years, something to watch.”<<

Well, yesterday he said: ““As far as Iran goes, this is the single biggest state sponsor of terrorism in the world,” Mattis said at a press conference in Tokyo on Saturday.”

So I was right; he is singling out Iran. Overall, it is not a surprise. Don’t know if he’s been holding a ‘grudge’. But it’s been very obvious the US won’t take a firm anti-Islamic terrorism stance with Saudi Arabia or their satellites. Not publicly anyway. Even as it’s been crystal clear they’ve been directly part of funding, training and supporting groups such as ISIS & yes even AQ, for years. Trade and other major considerations are involved, with Trump administration too, on individual, state and enterprise levels.

“It could well be construed as negligence too to prevent such an attack.” = to *not* prevent such an attack.
