Between Jan. 23 and 27, 2017, there were reports that Syrian president Bashar Al Assad had suffered a stroke and had to be hospitalized. I do not believe this U.S. administration is as clueless as the last one. But even if they are now, they will not remain so. The last administration never picked up on a clue even when it punched them squarely on the nose. Thankfully we are not living in Obama’s third term.

The big reason to overthrow Assad was to eliminate Iran’s main ally. If his alliance with them splits for other internal reasons, and he has to seek support elsewhere, we may in the end have achieved the same end.
Obama’s plan was to replace Assad and the Iranians with Al Qaeda and ISIS. That was a plan doomed to disaster from the beginning. Especially since his plan also delivered half of Iraq to Iran. Obama’s plan was almost completely incoherent, its internal contradictions made it look like it was put together after a night of Scrabble.
Obama wanted a pipeline through Syria. Assad didn’t. Arab spring.
