President Trump began his campaign assailing immigrants as ruthless lawbreakers who steal American jobs with impunity. To halt them, he has vowed to build a wall along the border with Mexico, hire thousands of new immigration agents, ramp up immigrant detention and subject visa applicants to even more rigorous vetting. His administration has been largely silent, however, about the strongest magnet that has drawn millions of immigrants, legal and not, to the United States for generations: jobs.
American employers continue to assume relatively little risk by hiring undocumented immigrants to perform menial, backbreaking work, often for little pay. Meanwhile, as Mr. Trump’s deportation crackdown accelerates, families are being ripped apart, and communities of hard-working immigrants with deep roots in this country are gripped by fear and uncertainty. As long as employers remain off the hook, a border wall and an expanded dragnet can only make temporary dents in the flows of undocumented immigrants.

Although I disagree with the tone and verbiage used, I agree 100% that E-verify (or some other system) must be made mandatory with steep penalties for non-compliance. A wall and sweeps will only do so much. Make E-verify mandatory and the job opportunities for illegals will be greatly diminished.
Gee NYT folk need to read the last immigration law which was signed by Bill Clinton in 1996...

You're right. They just won't be honest enough to acknowledge that illegal immigration is the problem, but we should also punish employers who knowingly hire illegals.
I must have skipped over this phrase in the NYT’s report:
“...as President Obama did.”
They 100% should require and enforce E-Verify by Federal law.
They also need to block money to children when neither parent can prove they are a legal resident or citizen of the United States.
Those two right there sends most illegals home unable to survive in America.
I think 95% of non legal residents between anchor babies and everything else are on welfare.
actually a fitting punishment for hiring illegal aliens would be to have their business license/permit revoked for illegal practices...
there are certain rules a business must promise to abide by after all to stay in business...
Start throwing employers and landlords in jail and watch the illegals self deport by the millions. Since this is not happening I question how serious the administration really is about solving the problem.

Pres. Trump called for making improvements to the E-Verify system in order to support a nationwide mandate in his 2018 budget request to Congress. Requiring all employers to use E-Verify is the top step in our 'Ten Steps to Fixing the Broken Immigration Enforcement System'.
Pres. Trump will need help from Congress, though, in making E-Verify mandatory for all employers. First, his request to set aside $15 million to make improvements to the system is just that -- a request. Congress would need to make it official by including it in its FY18 DHS spending bill. Furthermore, requiring all employers to use the employment verification system would require legislation from Congress.
Hope to hear soon that strict enforcement at the employer level has started, including stiff penalties for business owners and responsible corporate officials.
We should increase enforcement on employers.
Start with construction and food processing, those two industries hire many illegal aliens.

Yes! Jobs and welfare benefits are the essential magnets. Eliminate some of the attractions and they’ll start self-deporting.
Simple fix via law - during any year in which a business is found to employ undocumented workers, do not allow any deductions to their taxes
