Tattoo Removal Business Booming As Fears Of Deportation Mount
CBS San Fran ^

SAN PABLO (KPIX 5) — An East Bay tattoo removal clinic says they’ve treated a record number of clients since the election.

Some in the Latino community worry ICE agents will use their tattoos as an excuse to stop them and check immigration status.

The number of customers has doubled. Typically, people go in to remove an ex-lover’s name or get rid of tattoos for job interviews.

But the fear of deportation is a new reason.

“A lot of people don’t want to be a moving target or even seen as a target,” says Nora Ruiz of the San Pablo Economic Development Corporation. “And for fear that they might be seen as a certain type of person or judged in anyway, people want to get their tattoos removed.”

There’s no evidence suggesting ICE agents are targeting people based on tattoos but people with gang ties or criminal backgrounds are at risk.

It appears some people aren’t taking any chances.

There’s a really good book called Tattoos on the Heart about a priest who asked for and was assigned to the worst barrio in LA. One of the things he started was a tattoo removal service. I really recommend the book.

Getting an ID: SUPER hard, really expensive. Technical, tricky.

Getting a tattoo removed: A snap. Affordable. Uncomplicated, untroublesome

BEAM ME THE HELL UP..!

No tattoos mean they can afford their own health care?

I wonder if ICE might be interested in this place.

I saw a pastor who started a church of former gang members. They removed the tattoo.

It’s actually an offense worthy of death to the gangs, btw. Not something to do lightly.

Reminds me of Johnny Depps unfortunate tattoo. When engaged to Winona Ryder he had a tattoo done which read “Winona forever”. Well, she dumps him and he’s stuck with the tattoo. Now, does he have the entire tattoo removed? Nope. Johnny goes in and has the tattooist put a small rose over the “NA” in “Winona”. The tattoo now reads “wino forever”.

LOL

That was my first thought. They want to get their gang tattoos removed, to be safer.

I’ve come to really appreciate the art work that goes into ‘some’ tattoos. I look them up on the internet, and some of them are truly amazing.

The problem is, I don’t like them on people.

Do it on an easel or a poster.

Here’s my major problem with a tattoo on me. I find that I really like some works of art the first time I see it. I will go back and look at it again over and over for perhaps a couple of years. Then it becomes passe. I move on.

I don’t want a piece of art on my body that I’m going to get tired of in a couple of years or less. Then what?

It’s also a possible tip off to someone being gang affiliated. If you’re not into the gang culture, you don’t know the ‘real’ tell-tale signs. For that reason I shy away from people who have them out here in California.

In other areas of the nation, perhaps that’s not as big a problem but with gang proliferation, I wouldn’t bet on it.

Hey gangbangers, keep your stunningly beautiful MS-13 and teardrop tattoos for thug posterity. Leave our country and we'll call it even.
