Itís O.K., California. Breaking Up Isnít Hard to Do

SACRAMENTO — Two leaders of the successful referendum to remove Britain from the European Union were recently in California, where they said favorable things about the newest version of a plan to split the state in pieces. As Arron Banks told a British newspaper, “It’s the world’s sixth largest economy, and it’s very badly run.” He isn’t the only person to believe that a breakup may be the best way to solve California’s intractable problems.

Some news reports about the Yes California independence campaign used the term “Calexit,” which makes for good headlines because it sounds like “Brexit,” but it’s confusing. Some left-leaning activists indeed are pushing a far-fetched “Calexit” idea to create a new California nation, something that has gained publicity after Donald Trump’s victory shocked Democratic-dominant California. This Yes California campaign has a ballpark-zero chance of gaining traction. It’s mostly about venting.

While creating a new nation would tear the United States asunder, redrawing state boundaries is nowhere near as unthinkable — or as dangerous — as some suggest.

“We should explore creating more states so we have a democracy that’s closer to the people,” said Scott Baugh, a former Republican assemblyman who met with Mr. Banks and Nigel Farage when they were in Orange County to receive an award. California has nearly 40 million people and is growing. At what point is the population too large for a single state? he wondered in a recent interview. That’s a question Californians have been asking since the early days of the state’s existence.

When a motley crew of American settlers, native-born “Californios” and European immigrants assembled in Monterey in 1849 for a constitutional convention, there was wide disagreement about where to put the eastern boundary for the proposed state of California.

We’d be better off without them.

They would be a 3rd world country if not kept under check.

They should also be forced to pay for the defense we would be providing them.

California is a part of the USA. The better plan is to reform california and change the way they think.

california should remain whole and a part of the USA. the better plan is for the rest of the USA to change the culture of california to look more like the USA.

How would we do that? Indoctrination centers, forced internments?

Perhaps we could allow the leftist western areas to secede and retain the eastern Conservative portions. The western parts could become an equivalent of Singapore, and when the “Big One” hits, who will miss it?

I feel the same way about Texas, so we’re even. But not unlike Texas most of California, land area-wise, is Conservative, so breaking up both states would be a plus for the Senate. The problem for Texas though is how do you craft a “liberal state” that includes only Houston, Dallas, Austin, Whacko, The Rio Grande Counties and San Antonio? It would look like a worm.

Simply ending direct government subsidies to illegals would accomplish 80% of the goal.

An East West split would net a Red State.

I have yet to see a map of a divided California that I am in agreement with. This comes pretty close:

I tell you what...

If you at the same time combine CT, RI, MA, NH and VT into one mid size state thus eliminating 8 liberal Senators...
THEN I will support splitting California down the middle with a northern California and Southern California which gains 2.

Net effect -6 liberal Senators.

You break it into three parts. One part is San Francisco area to Los Angeles. The rest is broken into two parts, north and south. You would have two red states and one blue state

If the day come California leaves the union...

The very next day the red 75% would leave California and rejoin the union.

Good luck with a “country” made up islands along a coast with no water or power...

“I care a LOT about them breaking up into multiple states and getting more Senators!”

Exactly. If they split we end with 2 more Rat senators. Northern CA is not as bad but still infested with rats. No it’s better for us if they leave. CA has gangrene, better to cut it off and save the body.

Split off San Francisco, Alameda, and L A counties.

Let them go. Leave the rest of California to the Americans.

Be interesting to Hellifornia secede. Want to see how they’re going to fund their own private army, pave and maintain their own roads and infrastructure, pay for their own mega-universities without federal money, educate their college and high school without the availability of Pell grants and high school supplements, how they’re going to related to American military bases such as MCRD, San Diego, Camp Pendleton, the Navy and Air Force bases. How they’re going to pay for Colorado River water. How Maxine Waters is going to run for the presidency, how Pelosi won’t have a place to go in the mornings, how she won’t have any constituency or California colleagues in Congress. It’s all going to be fun to watch, especially of American military forces are sent in to arrest the president of a foreign power.
