I have never heard of lake mermaids.

A fresh water mermaid is a Naiad.

If a male can be a female, a white can be black why should we judge if she wants to be a mermaid? We should not be speciesphobic.

Do I need a /s?

Depends on your folklore.

In Greece Oceanids were what you would think of as a traditional mermaid in salt water. Naiads were freshwater. A Limnad was a naiad who lived in a lake. In all cases they were bound to their environment but could leave and assume human form for a shot time.

In Russia they are Rusalkas.

In France they Melusine.

Mermaids are pretty popular in legends from all around the world.

If she self identities as a mermaid who are we to say she isn’t.
