Extremely sad. This is one of my biggest fears when my little ones were younger. I ALWAYS visually walk around the vehicle before moving. Sometimes even after an inspection, I waited until all young people were accounted for. Many times I made them get into the truck while I moved hay, feed, moved fencing, etc. prayers out for this man and his family.

Oh they will be divorced in a year. I doubt she will forgive him. Oh she may say so but she will always look at him as a killer of their daughter. I pray for them as they are in for a long road.

Yep. I don’t recall the exact statistics but learned years ago that when one parent is ‘at fault’ in the death of a child, it very frequently leads to divorce.

Whenever possible (including in my own driveway and garage) I park so I don’t have to back out. The view is so much clearer of what’s going on in front than what’s in back of a car.

Professional drivers walk completely around their vehicles before driving, checking for obstacles as well as low tires, etc.

When my children were little, I would always scoop them up, put them into the vehicle before moving it around the driveway or garage. Just to be sure I knew where they were.

One time I went outside, and out of the corner of my eye spotted a neighbor's 3-yr-old boy under a different neighbor's truck in a driveway, several houses away. That neighbor comes and goes a lot, jumping into his truck and quickly pulling away. I pulled the kid out from under the truck, brought him to his house, and the people didn't even realize the kid had left the house. It's something no one thinks about, to check under their vehicle when leaving, especially if you have no kids! I certainly don't.

While statistics may favor your supposition, it is still just a supposition. You really don’t know; and I hope if they have a religious vow or other children that your inappropriate malediction will not take place.

My mother, when in her late 50’s, accidentally backed her car into her sister while dropping her at her apartment building. The car knocked her over, and broke our aunt’s hip.

It started a downward spiral of health problems for my “auntie,” who died about 18 months later. Auntie smoked like a chimney and eventually died of cancer, but my mom never forgave herself, as she felt she caused the spiral downward.

I feel so sorry for this man.

Judging from the comments on this thread, it happens more than I had thought. Prayers sent for this couple, and anyone who accidentally hurts an innocent child. And I pray it never happens to me or mine.

Tragic.

The majority of low-speed accidents happen when backing.

If possible, back first. Better yet, avoid backing at all.

If you back into a parking space, you ordinarily have the advantage to see everything more clearly.

Then when you leave, there is no need to back up.

Um, he ran her over going forward.

“Police responded to a car/pedestrian accident about 3:45 p.m. and were told the girl was on the driveway when Heap moved the truck forward and hit her. “

Like a few posters have said, always look all around the vehicle before moving it. Something I always do. Habit from being a pilot.

“Um, he ran her over going forward.”

Don’t know how I missed that. Somehow I thought I read he backed over her.

“Judging from the comments on this thread, it happens more than I had thought.”

That’s what I was thinking. I knew a lady from work many years ago that backed over her baby daughter but that’s the only one I had ever heard of, until now.

I remember doing that many years ago, when my niece was about 4. I needed to move my parents’ pickup into the garage, and Megan was playing nearby. “Megan! Want to ride in the truck?” “Yeah!”

Everybody should even when you don’t feel you need to.

Friend of mine did so at a Bass Pro Shop one day and found he got nailed by a van on the passenger side. He went back in the store and they pulled the video and busted the guy who hit him.

You just never know.
