Two advantages....first, labor is at the weakest point it’s been since the early 1990s. If you found ten guys who voted twenty years ago for labor and asked the same ten today...at best you’d only have five or six willing to vote for them. Second, it sends a clear message across to the EU that May (99-percent chance of winning) has full support of the public for BREXIT.

She might also be thinking that Le Pen may will the French election, and this might be a good occasion to take advantage of numbers.

Sorry for my ignorance, but what is a “snap” election? They aren’t electing parliament again, are they?!

Interesting...I've seen it written that polls in Britain suggest that the Tories would trounce Labour if an election were to be held now.I wonder if she's trying to strengthen her hand in the Brexit negotiations.

IIRC a snap election in a country like Britain means an election that's not *required*.I think in Britain national elections must be held at least every 5 years but can be called earlier.

Yes, a full general election of the House of Commons. What makes it a snap election is the sudden nature of it being called without clear warning, well before the expiry of the current term - snap meaning ‘quick’ in this case.

What makes this one especially interesting is that Britain is supposed to have moved to fixed terms - May will need the permission of the House of Commons to call this election, and it basically makes a mockery of the fixed term ‘reform’ forced on David Cameron by the LibDems when he had to form a coalition.

That's exactly what they're doing.

A "snap" election is an election outside of the regular schedule. All the parliament seats are up for re-election. The Prime Minister is not directly elected by the people, the leader of the winning party gets the job.

Wow...one thing that occurred to me....if this election is about Brexit there will be a “full court press”...*huge* interference...by Brussels. It seems they're already worried sick about Le Pen,this might make for even more suicides among the smoked salmon and limo crowd there.

Yes, this is their one ‘legitimate’ play to stop Brexit. If Labor decided to make this a ‘pseudo-referendum’ on it (unlikely, I think, but not impossible) and won (very unlikely) a legitimate constitutional case could be made that ‘the people have spoken and changed their mind’.

Of course, this would also require the EU nations to agree to allow Britain to back down.

So it could be very interesting.

I can’t really see it happening, but I can certainly see people trying to make it happen.

It’s not a do over on her account. She is now committed to Brexit. The only way this election could stop it even potentially is her losing.

Frankly, I see this as the best chance in a generation to elect something approaching a truly conservative government with a true mandate to set Britain right.

Sky News reported this is what Margaret Thatcher did to consolidate her power.

Her statement was excellent.

June 8 is the day for the legislative elections in France that follow the presidential one.

The Fixed Term Parliaments Act was a dumb idea in the first place. In a Westminster style Parliament flexibility for the timing of an election can keep both sides honest.

In this case Labour are going to pay dearly for having Jeremy Corbin as a leader. But he will be forced out after a near certain loss and the UK can get a functioning opposition again.

Policies aside, Corbin has been a poor leader who has divided his party against itself. He needs to go for Labour to rebuild.

The Tories will get a solid mandate to finish withdrawl from the EU.

The Lib Dems and UKIP will get to sort out their future
