California officer detained in Taiwan after TSA misses gun in her bag at LAX

Federal officials have admitted that procedures were violated at Los Angeles International Airport when an off-duty police officer boarded a flight to Taiwan with a handgun in her carry-on bag.

Santa Monica Officer Noell Grant was barred from leaving Taiwan on April 13, after she entered the country with the gun that was missed by airport security at LAX, authorities said.

The Transportation Security Administration “has determined standard procedures were not followed and a police officer did in fact pass through the checkpoint with a firearm,” TSA Public Affairs Manager Nico Melendez said in a statement Wednesday.

This still image from a YouTube video posted on the Santa Monica Police Department’s website shows Officer Noell Grant. (Image courtesy YouTube) When asked if anyone would be disciplined, he said, “we’ll hold those responsible appropriately accountable.”

The Santa Monica Police Department was notified last week that Grant had been detained at an airport in Taiwan during a layover to Thailand, Santa Monica police confirmed Wednesday. Grant was on vacation with family at the time, said Lt. Saul Rodriguez, the department’s public information officer.

“We know that she left out of here – out of LAX – arrived in Taiwan, at which point she notified officials in Taiwan that she inadvertently left a weapon in her bag, being the gun that was found,” Rodriguez said.

True that Taiwan is not a usual vacation spot. But it could be, or should be. People just don’t know about it.

Nonetheless, it was a transit stop en route to Thailand where they were going for vacation.

Government workers break laws by accident and get off. While if we do the same thing, the punishment is worse

The standard for everybody in Dallas used to be $10k (lawyer and civil penalty) I don't know if inflation has impacted that.

On the other hand, cop an attitude, and one might end up looking at a felony.

In the People's Democratic Socialist states, one might face more pain from the state than the feds.

“Now in Taiwan, changing airplanes for another international flight, she might get re-screened in that situation”

My guess is that is the case, but am not sure.

Still, if this were the case, she had to tell security. And even, if not she had no other choice to inform them because she can’t just leave it in the bathroom, or risk having it found out going through customs or by whatever happenstance.

Residueis a bear to explain at times...

I once flew outta KCI back to Fort Drum- we had been doing some rather interesting things with all sorts of military explosives with some NG SF guys at Fort Riley KS. I get popped for explosive residue all over my self and carry on ( I was travelling in civvies, but the bag had been down range with me for two weeks of all sorts of shots using everything from M1 Dynamite cratering charges, det cord and C4 and the like.).

Needless to say I eventually rented a car and drove....

Seems my AD ID card and story just didn’t convince the security folks- and this was about a year prior to 2001... Maybe it was because one Captain laughed at me getting popped and asked in a joking voice if I left it all on the range.....

Gunpowder Residue

Residue can bring on a scrub by a sponge-like instrument on the suspect bag. Had it happen to me once. After the scrub, I asked the officer what had set off the scanner, and he said "gunpowder." I had used my ammo bag for an extra carry-on! After verifying the bag's contents, I was on my way!

“They don’t want safety, they want control. To put it another way, Safety is not their goal. Control is their goal.”

Don’t forget union jobs! That’s become the number one reason for the TSA.

And why is an LA cop headed to Taiwan with a firearm in tow?

You could get a crew-served weapon past TSA.
