China Is Building The World's Largest Nuclear Submarine Facility (Build Four Subs At A Time)
Popular Science ^ | 4-19-2017 | Jeffrey Lin and P.W. Singer

It can build four subs at a time.

When this enclosed submarine factory begins operation later this year, the Bohai Shipbuilding Heavy Industry Co. (BSHIC) will be able to quickly build nuclear submarines. Assembling SSNs in a building also provides the advantage of sheltering against the weather, not to mention nosy spy satellites.

Starting later this year, China's new submarine factory on the Yellow Sea will churn out nuclear-powered attack submarines—also known as SSNs—all but ensuring that the sub program of the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) will be a deadly global force.

Bohai Shipbuilding Heavy Industrial Corporation is putting the finishing touches on its new facility, which will start production this year. BSHIC, based in Huludao, Liaoning Province, is China's only builder of nuclear submarines. It previously built the Type 091, 093 nuclear attack submarines (SSN) and Type 092 and 094 nuclear ballistic missile submarine (SSBN). Why is this building such a big deal? Simple, really: inside a superstructure, submarines are hidden from snoops, spies, and satellites. It also provides a controlled environment for development and construction.

I can understand American ingenuity and even the bravado, certainly. It’s how we are made. But to pooh-pooh China’s naval efforts as some sort of catch-up effort is, in my opinion, foolhardy to say the least.

We excel because we were forced to create a weapons creations market due to WWII, and afterwards. It propelled us because of an economy that was second to none at the time. Liberals have done their best since then to destroy that. Our military and might only now exists because of American exceptionalism and the selfless, dogged determination of its warriors and the diminishing equipment our self-concerned entitlement crowd want to ‘deign’ to them - through tooth-and-nail bitter fights with Americans at times.

China, above anything else is a totalitarian state that LEARNS quickly. They learn from out mistakes and they realize that the long term goal is to overcome us. That means letting their populace feel the riches of capitalism when it suits them and simultaneously being able to put any - ANY - amount of intellectual power to any problem.

Could Microsoft put one million programmers against a software problem, or a micro electronics problem? China does - several times over. They can do this so many times over in so many areas in engineering and every other aspect of advancement for one’s agenda. We compound the problem by making so much of that technology available to the world just because of making a sale for a large order to make a buck.

Look at their defenses. They have versions of radars and missile systems copied and reproduced by the multiple dozens all the way up from archaic to next-gen to current to tomorrow at the same time. 4 generations by my personal count.

Just damn. Too laugh them off is an obituary.

With major financing supplied by China’s one-sided trade with the USA.

Do you think we aren’t currently, and always, innovating?

The Chinks have nothing on us. They have the people, we have the brains. We spend over double what they do, with a percentage of the force. They may catch up someday, but not any day soon.

Number one. I never called them ‘chinks’- at least not in the context you now mean. That Mr. Moto stuff in B&W we used to laugh at disappeared right along with AMOS and ANDY shows on TV years ago.

I grew out of that and started looking beyond that. Money, resources, manpower and determination - all things of which we are in short now supply now because of liberals, primarily.

You just do not understand and I really don’t think we will come to some mutual ground. We’ll see I guess. I hope I’m wrong, but I don’t think so. Reputation is one thing; continued follow-through is another.

Want to bet? People are people, no matter their race. Each barrel contains a wide assortment of mind types.

American students are very lazy and committed mostly to video games and social media. They are not particularly good students. The great ones, on the other hand, are spectacular.

I have only taught for one year following a 46 year career as an embedded software/hardware engineer. Frankly, I'm very disappointed with the current crop of students in my class. They won't read technical material, insisting on spoon feeding for every morsel of knowledge. That won't work in engineering. Guess what: Making submarines is engineering.

I never said you called anyone anything. I called them Chinks, because they are our enemy. If you think my use of the word makes me juvenile, so be it.(Mr. Moto was for Nips, not Chinks) China relies on us far more than we rely on them...we hold the cards.

I really hope you win because I think your heart is in the right place even if it may be misguided somewhat. I won’t even go into my ‘Moto’ mistaken reference applied to ‘Nips’ that illustrates the problem. There WERE other versions of him on TV that were indeed Chinese in the terms you understand.

I’m not trying to undermine your enthusiasm and support for our way of life. Far from it. I only want you to realize bravado against a very determined enemy with almost infinite resources isn’t a cake-walk.

To depend on that mystique and lore in the midst of the anti-American forces in our own country is counter-productive. We’re better than that and we have to recognize real threats when they are present.

The problem is their fragile economic model. They are terribly capitalist right now but that can change. There is always a possibility of implosion.

They send their kids to the West to study STEM, not economics.

"They may catch up someday"

No need to say anything more. That right there is the problem.
