Border wall fight looms as White House, Capitol Hill scramble for deal to avert shutdown
CNN ^ | April 24th, 2017 | By Deirdre Walsh and Ted Barrett

(CNN) Fights over money to pay for a border wall -- as well as Obamacare subsidies and an infusion of resources for the military -- are threatening to trip up congressional talks over a funding bill to head off a government shutdown Friday.

...

But Democrats are warning that the White House, which stayed out of the fray during much of these talks, is ratcheting up demands, insisting on including border wall money in exchange for continuing to pay insurance companies subsidies to bolster the Obamacare marketplace, which they say is a nonstarter. President Donald Trump highlighted the issue over the weekend and on Monday.

"The Wall is a very important tool in stopping drugs from pouring into our country and poisoning our youth (and many others)!" Trump tweeted.

But White House officials said late Sunday that they did not want the government to shut down over any impasse in the spending talks -- and that's a directive straight from the President.

Top administration officials explained to the President this weekend that the most likely scenario is a stopgap bill that would last a week or so until a deal is reached. "There's no interest in a shutdown," an official says, adding they will "do what it takes" to avoid one.

Aides for the top Republicans and Democrats on the appropriations committees say they are making progress under the deadline pressure. But they also concede that significant sticking points remain and Congress, which is returning from a two-week recess, will have just a few days to get a bill to the President's desk.

Multiple aides tell CNN that Congress may need to pass a stopgap measure -- potentially for a week or more -- to give them time to reach a final deal.

I wonder why CNN is not headlining the fact that Republicans in the House cannot muster a simple majority to pass a budget?

They are in negotiations with House Democrats for votes!

Republicans are not worth the shot and powder to blow them to hell.

The media say they need 60 Senators to pass the budget, which seems like insanity to me.

If Trump doesn’t get exactly what he wants with this budget bill, he should veto it and let the shutdown occur....

In the Senate 60 votes are required to overcome a filibuster.

But the House is unable to muster a simple majority, and the Republicans have a 40+ vote advantage.

“They are in negotiations with House Democrats for votes!”

After all, they are the Uniparty.

IIRC, Obama NEVER submitted a budget on time.

“IIRC, Obama NEVER submitted a budget on time.”

Great, but not relevant.

Does the Republican Party want to be known for open borders? They will be if they don’t fund the wall in the budget.

“That’s what would be needed to pass over Trump’s veto.....”

Not so. It takes 2/3 in both the House and Senate to override a POTUS veto.

That’s actually fewer votes than required for impeachment and conviction.

Obama didn’t try to avoid a shutdown, he ordered it.

Here’s the deal: Find a way to include funding for the Wall or Trump will have every reason to go to the Democrats and see what they want in return for it.

I honestly wish he would. Maybe seen Schmuch Schumer’s grinning mug gloating over some quid pro quo would teach the Republicans a lesson about how then need to cut the crap and start working WITH Trump.

Democrats can’t hope to do better in 2018 and 2020 if they don’t stop president Trump from keeping his campaign promises.

They are like tenacious bulldogs and will vote against the interests of their own constituents and their states to stymie Trump and ruin his presidency.

Republicans can’t hope to hold onto their congressional majorities in 2018 and the presidency in 2020 if they don’t help president Trump keep his campaign promises.

They are the opposite of the democrats - more like a herd of spoiled, snarling cats than bulldogs.
They ignore their republican party platform and won’t even keep their own campaign promises or help president Trump keep his.

*************

That assumes a filibuster type situation I think. It only takes a majority to
pass the proposed budget but you do have to get it to that point.

He should send that message to the Republican caucus.
