A flash of light Thursday in the night sky over Los Angeles sent observers to social media to ask what it was and whether anyone else saw it.
Vandenberg Air Force Base said it launched no missiles Thursday, and experts at Griffith Observatory were checking into what people might have seen.
Huge #Light in the #Sky here above #Los #Angeles what was that ? #Missile test ? #Meteor? Anyone else saw it ? #California

The Air Force has been launching missiles to test whether they can stop a N. Korean nuclear strike.
I see lights in the sky all the time. I just don’t get worked up about it.
It’s probably just the same thing that caught Pickles Clinton’s eye at the DNC the night she “won” the nomination over Bern. Man, I’ve watched that gif so many times; it always cracks me up!
Ping.
Maybe it’s the new ‘nuclear fence’ to keep out illegals.
Just hold still.
This won't hurt a bit.
Damn, I may now scale back my eclipse watching party...
What a brain trust.
Wrong.................
Swamp gas.
What did it look like to you?
Looked kind of like the flash you get when a substation-level fuse goes nonlinear.
That weather lady is something to look at. What else would you expect in LA. Evelyn Taft.
They said the flash was reported by people driving on the 10 freeway in Culver City. There is currently an outage affecting more than 1600 people in Santa Monica. Perhaps related? It’s in the right position with respect to the 10, assuming the dash-cam drivers were heading west at the time they recorded the flash.
You are kidding, right? I lived in Ventura county for over thirty years. Missile launches were a great spectacle, not a deep mystery. But then is northwest of L.A. and a far different place and people.
"An unarmed Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile was launched during an operational test at 12:02 a.m. PDT here Wednesday, May 3, 2017."
No longer live there, but still get the V'berg launch alerts.
If it’s in Kalifornia, it’s most likely a flaming asshole!
The strangest thing I ever saw over Los Angeles was something that looked like an airburst of some sort, miles up in a clear sky.
It occurred directly overhead, and quickly spread out in a widening perfect circle, almost to the horizon.
We didn’t have internet in the late eighties, and I didn’t hear anything about it on the news, so it’s remained a mystery to me.
You know what that was?
An air burst of some sort miles up in a clear sky
