Scottish Conservatives enjoy major gains in local elections

Voting on Thursday confirmed the constitutional issue as the main faultline in Scottish politics, after a renewed push by the Scottish National party for a second referendum on leaving the UK. The Conservatives more than doubled their share of Scottish local council seats, to 276 — a result party leaders hope will provide a springboard for next month’s general election.
