Skip to comments. After Mueller, Trump Critics Worry: Maybe There’s No Scandal

Eli Lake is right: The DOJs appointment of widely-respected former prosecutor Robert Mueller to lead the special inquiry into the Trump campaigns potential collusion with Russia is a reprieve for a Trump Administration in crisisa reprieve that it will almost certainly squander, but a reprieve nonetheless.
How do we know? Because the responses from Trumps most dogged critics on the Russia question betray a kind of anxiety about the Mueller appointmentan anxiety that the no-nonsense law enforcement wise man will lower the temperature in Washington without actually uncovering enough damaging material to bring down the President.
Take, for example, Josh Marshall declaring that while he has confidence in Mueller to identify and expose any criminal activities undertaken by Trump or his associates, he wont be able to prosecute the real Trump-Russia wrongdoing: a labyrinthian conspiracy which may not even involve any illegal behavior.
It is critical to understand that the most important details we need to know about the Russian disruption campaign and the Trump campaigns possible collusion with it may not be crimes. Indeed, I would say that the crimes were likely to discover will likely be incidental or secondary to the broader actions and activities were trying to uncover. Just hypothetically, what if Russia had a disruption campaign, Trump campaign officials gave winks and nods to nudge it forward but violated no laws? Thats hard to figure but by no means impossible. (Our criminal laws are not really designed for this set of facts.) The simple point is that the most important bad acts may well not be crimes. That means not only is no one punished but far, far more important, we would never know what happened.
And heres David Frum in the Atlantic making a similar objection:
The special counsel will investigate whether people in the Trump campaign violated any laws when they gleefully leveraged the fruits of Russian espionage to advance their campaign.
By contrast, what happened in plain sightcheering rather than condemning a Russian attack on American democracywill be treated as a non-issue, because it was not criminal, merely anti-democratic and disloyal.
Since the summer before the election, Trumps critics have been suggesting or sometimes stating outright that Russia is involved with a criminal conspiracy that reaches to the highest levels of Trumps inner circle. But now that an unimpeachable bulldog prosecutor has been named to probe these very allegations, the critics seem to be trying to move the goalposts, saying that the real problem isnt criminality, but the sleaze and outlandish behavior of the Trump campaign more generallybehavior that was already obvious to voters when they went to the polls in 2016, and will be even more obvious when they go to the polls in 2018.
Trumps outrageous and indefensible conduct around the Russia investigationhis firing of Comey to attempt to quash the inquiry, along with the subsequent allegations that he demanded Comeys loyalty early on and leaned on him to drop the investigation of Mike Flynncries out for a special counsel, and Mueller, by all accounts, is a consummate choice. Any wrongdoing related to the Trump campaign, from the President himself to bottom-feeders like Carter Page, should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
But the Trump-Russia hounds now seem to be realizing the limits of the scandal they have been pursuingyes, maybe someone like Manafort will go down for money-laundering, and yes, Trump had shady deals with Russian banks as a real estate tycoon in the 1990s. But this is simply not as big of a scandal as they would like it to be.
Mueller seems well-equipped to do what the country sorely needs right now: Determine if there was criminal collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia, and hold any wrongdoers accountable. He is not, however, equipped to do what Trumps most relentless critics seem to want: Launch a wide-ranging and essentially political investigation into Donald Trump and his associates with the aim not of bringing the matter to a resolution, but of creating a steady stream of media frenzies that paralyzes an administration they loathe.
Wow, who would have thought there was one? I thought it was a bunch of overgrown children throwing temper tantrums and crap at the wall to see what sticks.
None of the Trump critics i talk to are worried there is no scandal.
There’s always hillary-IRS-Fast&furious-Benghazi.....
I think he means the top 1% of his detractors, not the rank & file, don’t you?
The Trump Admin is NOT in crisis! The NeverTrumpers are in crisis.
We are currently experiencing a coup attempt that seeks to remove a sitting president. Not an impeachment but a coup.
First rule of staging a coup is that you better not fail! The coup is failing!
When this coup attempt dies, which it is, Trump will know by name who the traitors are and Trump does not forget. We will know very soon who the traitors are and many will go to jail.
Just the facts folks!
The Libtards will never let this go.
If the Special Counsel gives President Trump a clean bill of health the democrats will scream that the fix is in and that Robert Mueller has been corrupted by Trump and Putin.
I hope that you are correct. Time will tell.
This whole Russki “collusion” myth is a creation of the Obama/Clintoon “Deep State”. I checked under my bed and all of my closets and found no Russkis anywhere.
The only real benefit to this bs allegation and media frenzy is a few more anti trumpets have been smoked out.
I agree with you...I also think it is good that the never Trumpers decided to try and take down the president from day one. if they had pretended to play nice for six months and then started to go after President Trump they might of been successful in coning the American people. (thank god they are incompetent)
Thing people keep missing. It might just be Comey, and the Obama White House, not Trump, who is the focus of the special council
There's a thought I've had for the past few weeks, as world leaders seem to genuinely enjoy their meetings with Trump. Maybe most world leaders across the globe are quite happy to have President Trump, who wants peace instead of toppling them and destabilizing their countries.
Careful what you wish for?
The Donks will just make up another crisis. Fake But Accurate.
Trump should remember who his Republican detractors are. “May God help any Republican who goes against me” would be the perfect threat.
Trump will be vindicated and exonerated and they know it, therefore the Dems/MSM are now busy setting up the meme that Mueller will never be able to find out the “truth” and therefore Trump & Co. are still guilty, it just won’t be able to be discovered. No one but the snowflakes and hardcore kool-aid drinkers will believe them, and the Dems/MSM will be fully exposed as the despicable swamp creatures they are.
The the progressives/RATs/MSM cabal has squandered it’s credibility and won’t regain it for years. Watch for major collapsing in the homo-ginned-ized news media
Yep. I think the reasons they are backing off now are items two and three. All of the sudden the scope of the investigation has expanded from the narrow effort to get Trump to a broad effort to get anybody engaged in wrongdoing of any sort. And it seems pretty open-ended. Like having McCain passing that bogus dossier off. Like covering the illegal unmasking and spying on Americans. Anything related to the Russia-collusion claims, even remotely.
