Thank you.

I do but I hope I’m allowed to put it here. If I’m not well, admin cut it out I guess.

What aren’t the enviro wacko screaming that the road should be closed because obviously roads are threatening the environment. Better yet find an endanger ant species so it can’t be rebuilt.

Great, thanks! I bookmarked your page. I love that you’ve done pictures from all over the country. We are east coast here.

After I made the comment I looked a bit more on Google Earth. “You can’t get there from here” came to mind!

BTW - the name “Mud Creek” (where the slide happened) is almost as obvious as the name “Slide Creek” that problems will arise. (Or descend).

I’ve been to Carmel. Lived in the valley. Never heard of Camel.

Thank you, again. I love to paint. It’s a wonderful way to fall in love with America, I can tell you that. We are beautiful.

California coastline going North is really gorgeous along that Cabrillo Hwy. However, when that fog comes in it really moves fast. I was afraid to go farther. We didn’t.

It’s a good thing that road was closed when that landslide came down.

There is one. Nacimiento-Fergusson Road.

It's advisable to call ahead to Ft. Hunter Liggett http://www.liggett.army.mil/sites/contactus.php if desiring to use the road across the base. At times, they close it off. I just looked at the Outdoor Recreation page, and the base appears to be open to hunters during the week -- after 5PM, till dark (and then some). I'd call Outdoor Recreation, first. Must have valid ID, vehicle registration and proof of insurance.

If coming from inland, it would be no big deal to be turned away, but if stuck on the Coast near Gorda and needing to get out, better have enough fuel to get back to wherever on the Coast, then back again to Jolon, then King City. There may not be fuel available at Jolon anymore. I think years ago it was removed(?) but there used to be a store there that might have had gasoline. Otherwise, from Jolon, go North to King City, or East to 101, then South to San Miguel and Paso Robles for fuel, not counting what may be left at Gorda, if you like paying more than double for it...

If I still lived out that way, I'd probably be thinking of driving to Gorda area to bring food and fuel to people I know who live there...

Follow the road from the right side of the picture. Just past the driveway cutoff, the main road stays flat. That’s the area that is buried under the mud and rocks.

it exits from the left side of the slide.

2017 is the 50th anniversary of the Summer of Love. Big Sur got in on that weird time big time. Jonny Rivers song about Big Sur hit the airwaves in 1968. They still have the crazy stores with incense and aging hippies even now.

We drove it north from LA to San Francisco in 1984.

The two boys were little, sitting in the back seat on that endless winding, twisting road.
Both got car sick, both erupted all over my wife sitting between their car seats. Couldn’t clean up anything until we got off of the road at the next exit back towards the expressway inland.
Two and a half hours later.

Was not a “good trip.”
Memorable? Yes.
Good? No.

A long time ago, I used to fish trammel nets along there, (for California halibut) and near to that rock that's a little offshore. If I'm remembering properly that one should be White Rock #1.

Would get in about 7 fathoms (sometime a little shallower, but not much) and anchor there overnight (although the nets set out overnight, most of the time a bit deeper). It's not too bad when the the seas are not too bad, but it's always bumpier when on, then merely looking downwards on the waves, from the high shoreline.

There's a little bit of protection from largest waves on the South side of the rock, and the reef that runs from shore out to it.

To the Southwest, just outside the 100 fathom curve there's a natural oil seep. When it's flat calm, at times a sheen can be visible on the surface. In a different fishery, using larger boats, when we used to drag fish trawls through there (designed to get over hard bottom) it would stir things up, and you could smell the crude oil.

I used to know some of those people. The South Coast folks, anyway. Gorda area, and Pacific Valley, and up in the hills, Willow Creek Road, and Plaskett. Not so much the old hippies (and others) who clung on like barnacles further North towards Big Sur.
