Paris (AFP) - A car loaded with gas canisters rammed into a police van on the Champs-Elysees avenue in Paris on Monday, leaving the driver dead in what the interior minister said was an attempted attack.
Police sources told AFP that a Kalashnikov rifle, handguns and gas bottles were found in the white Renault Megane.
Video showed orange smoke pouring from the car after the impact as the vehicle sat in the middle of the prestigious avenue which is lined with shops and cinemas.
The police and the army have consistently been attacked by extremists in France.
"Security forces have been targeted in France once again," Interior Minister Gerard Collomb said, calling the incident an "attempted attack".

I was just watching local news on the CBS affiliate in Dothan, AL.
There was a report on the van and knife attack in London yesterday.
The very first thing she said was the attacker was a White Man. None of the usual crap when it is obviously a Muslim terrorist. Just right off the bat, “White Man”.
He won’t be getting his 72 virgins.
This was a very successful attack from the jihadist point of view — the reaction by security forces was to shut down one of the most popular avenues in the world, and future French tourism has experienced another crushing blow.
And yes according to his sick, twisted religion he will be getting his reward, for his martyrdom.
