Boston's Irish community on edge after contractor is deported
Boston Herald ^ | July 7, 2017 | by Brian Dowling Friday

A prominent Boston man nabbed by ICE last month for overstaying his visa by more than a decade has been sent back to Ireland, and the city’s Irish community is still worried about further deportations, an advocate said.

John Cunningham, 38, was a Brighton-based electrical contractor before he was detained for overstaying a 90-day visa that he used to enter the U.S. in 2003. Cunningham left on a commercial flight Wednesday night.

“ICE is enforcing the law, it’s simple and sometimes painful but they’re just doing their jobs,” said immigration attorney John Foley, a board member of the cultural center Cunningham chaired. “But there’s real fear in the Irish immigrant community, that if you’re out of status, they may come knocking.”

At an Irish immigrant rally yesterday, Irish International Immigrant Center executive director Ronnie Millar said: “These days migrants fleeing desperation, poverty and violence have to wait outside the door and those already here without papers live in fear of being arrested by ICE and being deported. This is no way for society to exist.”

You're right Ronnie. If you're here "without papers" -- get the hell out and go home!

People should see it clearly — the push for deportations is not about racism. It doesn’t matter where you come from or what language you speak. If you violate our immigration laws, you should go home. It’s actually pretty simple and it’s not based on any phobia or hatred of any kind.

Fleeing poverty, violence and desperation? LOL. This isn’t the potato famine... Ireland is richer by some measures than the United States!

US GDP per capita (2016): $57,300
Ireland GDP per capita (2016): $67,400

Poor guy!

If anyone is here illegally, they have to go home.
We are restoring the rule of law.
Leave now if you want to get in line.
If we have to remove you forcibly, you’ll be banned from re-entry for a while.

Illegal is illegal.

Doesn’t matter if you’re Irish or Mexican or from somewhere else. being fair-skinned doesn’t inoculate a person from deportation if that person’s here illegally.

Ted Kennedy made a provision in immigration for those named Shamus. Since since this guy doesn’t believe in Sharia law and he’s not into chain migration I believe there’s a place here for him. In 2003 he was 24 years old-no intention of returning. Are we racist for suggesting preferential treatment? This country’s success was mainly European-centric. So the Chinese built the railroad. Blacks picked cotton-no salary. No one gave the Europeans special treatment once arrived. 30% returned to the old country, couldn’t hack it. That’s the way it should be. Better he produce here than in the old country.

Agreed!

““These days migrants fleeing desperation, poverty and violence have to wait outside the door and those already here without papers live in fear of being arrested by ICE and being deported. This is no way for society to exist.”

they just expect to make up whatever they want as what society should do? just let everyone in, just let everyone overstay, no problem, except it’s depleting and killing the lives and resources from those of us legally here!

I don’t care this guy was prominent or employed or whatever, he sucked up business that could have went to legal businesses! How did he even get to open and operate his business as an illegal/on a visa? and that’s only one aspect of how his illegal being here hurt or worse to others.

I support this deportation 100%

Hispanics, I support law and order, whether it’s my people or your people who are breaking the law.

I had the impression that it's never been real hard for Irish people to stay in the US legally. Perhaps some members of the community have gotten careless about that?

This is necessary. It WOULD be racist to not deport everyone who's here illegally.

One less turkey hanging around the area. A massive sweep would cut down on “contractors” of all origins around here.

Yep. There’s gotta be more here than meets the eye.

I’d guess he probably got into some kind of dispute with a customer, supplier, competitor or trade union. Then the disputing party could have ratted on him to ICE.
