Schumer calls on FDA to regulate ‘snortable chocolate’

NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer is urging federal regulators to look into a “snortable chocolate” powder, saying he’s worried that it could prove harmful and is being marketed like a drug.

In a letter Saturday, the New York Democrat asked the Food and Drug Administration to investigate the use of caffeine in inhalable food products such as so-called Coco Loko. It’s gotten buzz in recent weeks.

Schumer, the Senate minority leader, says there are too many unanswered questions about a product pitched under the innocent-sounding name of chocolate.

“This suspect product has no clear health value,” he said in a statement. “I can’t think of a single parent who thinks it is a good idea for their children to be snorting over-the-counter stimulants up their noses.”

Marketed as “raw cacao snuff,” Coco Loko includes cacao powder, which comes from beans used in making chocolate; they contain some caffeine. Manufacturer Legal Lean Co. doesn’t detail other ingredients online, but according to news reports, Coco Loko also includes common energy-drink ingredients.

I think, for once, that Schumer is right. But then, even a broken clock is right twice a day.

At the rate we’re going, marijuana is going to be the only thing that is legal. And tofu, of course, for nutritional balance.

In the USA consumers assume that if something is sold ina normal store or online or in official type packaging, it is safe for human consumption.

We could go the other way. We could go third world. Caveat emptor. You buy your food and you take your chances. It could give you boutulism, or be milk made out of chalk, or be unsafe to use in the manner and dose prescribed.

If I see snortable chocolate in a store, I assume it’s been old for him a ingestion. If it has not been, then I think Schumer is right.

I’d prefer a system in our country where you have the choice of FDA approved or not. just enforce the honesty of the labels. In that case I’ll go for FDA approved every time unless at a pot luck or something where I know the people.

Satire. Given the leftist mania for regulating everything in sight, one day chocolate will be illegal.

Then it won’t be satire any more.

Nestle's is paying him off. It takes more product in milk to get the same effect than a line of chocolate powder... /s

When he says "regulate", I'd prefer "banned" from a Obamacare health cost, but I'd leave it up to ENT researchers to say whether it's unhealthy to put stuff where it doesn't belong.

Well it is amazing that all of sudden D.C. has solved all the big problems they are faced with and now can focus on trivial crap like this.

Now it makes sense. Yesterday I noticed the cocoa shelves at the local Wal*Mart were empty.

Hardly satire. Do a search on the title. The story even appears in the NY Times.

Once again, Chuckie Schumer and the Democratic Party speak out in search of another thing to CONTROL the American citizen!!!

In doing that, Schumer and the Democratic Party demonstrate that they are NOT the champions of FREEDOM, and INDIVIDUAL RESPONSIBILITY.

I wonder which major chocolate company is paying him to raise the dust on this issue?????

First, to the (probably very limited) extent that “snortable chocolate” exists, it’s both gross and stupid.

Second, I do not want government regulating every gross and stupid idea that comes along. We have way too much government.

My reaction is my usual response to this moron: Go away, Chuckie Schumer.

That idea is both highly amusing and highly disgusting.
I give it a “No!”.
Can you imagine being fired for ‘Snorting Hersheys in the workplace bathroom, like some kid sniffing airplane glue in junior high? :Do NOT re-hire!

This story reminds me; whatever happened to powdered alcohol?
That was supposed to be available to the public some five, six years ago. Was it not approved? That would be surprising,
given the libertine attitude of today’s legislators.

I move that he be regulated.
