The 18-year-old man killed Wednesday when a thrill ride broke apart at the Ohio State Fair had joined the Marines less than a week before the tragedy.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol identified the lone person who was killed Thursday as Tyler Jarrell of Columbus. Seven others, who ranged in age from 14 to 42 years old, were injured when the Fire Ball ride malfunctioned and sent riders flying into the air.

The Marine Corps said in a statement that Jarrell, 18, enlisted on July 21 and wanted to be in the infantry or serve as a combat engineer. He was scheduled to attend basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, S.C. in June 2018.

I'm not entirely sure when one *officially and legally* becomes a member of the Armed Forces but I kinda hope this kid was considered to be at the time of his death so that his family can get the $250K insurance.

It sounds like he was to go to boot camp next summer, so doubtful he was “in” yet. I think the insurance is now up to $400K. I expect the family will be getting some funds from various lawsuits against the State of Ohio, Fair committee, ride vendors/operators... the list will be long.

I say hold Kasich accountable. (This seemingly obtuse observation brought to you by ‘Patriots Against RINOs’ )

No doubt there are win win lawsuits ahead....but I do hope the military insurance is available to his family.

He was scheduled for training...so it sounds like he was "IN".

I can tell you Kasich is hurting.

First, the guy gets on TV every chance he gets and tells us how wonderful he is.

You get a story like this and boom, you look very stupid.

It didn’t help when the first explanation offered was because of too much rain in the days leading up to the fair and how through inspections were bypassed.

A tragic accident and the primary reason why I am totally against these man made thrill ride amusements at fairs.

When you observe how fast these carnivals swoop into communities for their annual festivities, set up their privately owned thrill ride then dismantle at the end of the week and head to their next destination, one has to wonder why there aren't more accidents such as this........
