The last thing Keondrae Brown remembers before he blacked out is lying in shattered glass on Tampa Road, next to the burning wreckage of a stolen car, lucky to be alive after a high-speed crash that killed his brother and two of his friends.
Now Keondrae and two other boys in a second stolen car could face murder charges in the deaths of Keontae Brown, 16; Jimmie Goshey, 14; and Dejarae Thomas, 16.
Sheriff Bob Gualtieri suggested the more serious charges against the surviving teens at a news conference Monday, a day after the Palm Harbor crash once again highlighted Pinellas' deadly plague of juvenile car thefts.

"We have a serious problem and something else needs to happen," he said.
Frustrated with the persistent high-speed joyrides and the lack of consequences, Gualtieri shoved his finger into the podium, calling the juvenile system broken. He pointed to the teens' extensive criminal records — 126 arrests among them, including several for auto theft — as proof that the juvenile system rarely holds a kid for long. No consequences equals no fear of doing it again, he said.

The insured owner of the demolished SUV should receive full replacement value plus a modest bonus, because of the net benefit to the community linked to the vehicle loss.
Keondrae, Keontae, Dejarae, Deyon, and Kamal. Pictures not needed. Their mamas must be so proud. Of course, no mention of their dads. Maybe those who survived will get their dads as cellmates.
At least they didn’t kill innocent bystanders.
Bring back the draft and make a civilian version of it - get picked up for crimes (discounting petty crap like traffic tickets) thrice in a year, three strikes and yer’ “out” - to a year of hard labor with no bail/parole/time off for good behavior, etc.
Come back to pick up where you left off a year older and hopefully wiser.
The system we have now is frightfully overloaded and long since passed being an effective deterrent. Since we don’t have the balls to bring back adult corporal punishments, I suggest this as an alternative.
These deaths are on the judges who let these criminals get away with serious crimes time after time after time.
In the end the judges didn’t do the dead kids a favor but the sure did three big favors for the community and county.

The stolen car becomes an aggravating circumstance to manslaughter rather than the main charge, and will only add to the sentence.
I guess these niggly-bears (Tommy Sotomayer's name for them, not mine) picked the wrong night to go stolen car joy riding.

Anyway, their early removal from the gene pool is just one more bright spot in this story.
