World's Oldest Man, a Holocaust Survivor, Dies at 113

Israel Kristal, the world's oldest man who lived through both World Wars and survived the Auschwitz concentration camp has passed away just a month short of his 114th birthday, his family said Saturday.

Oren Kristal, a grandson, said he died Friday. "He managed to accomplish a lot. Every year he lived was like a few years for somebody else," Oren told The Associated Press.

Last year Guinness World Records awarded Kristal a certificate as the world's oldest man at his home in Haifa, Israel.

"He used to tell us whenever we were mourning someone that we should consider that they are being buried in the land of Israel, most of the people he knew did not get to be buried in a grave when they died," Oren said.

Boruch Dayan Emes - "G-d is the True Judge".

RIP, you poor soul, who lived through Auschwitz's horrors, including the loss of your first family. How wonderful that you were rewarded with long life to rebuild and make up that horrible loss, an opportunity few of us are granted.

Wouldn’t that make him the former oldest man?

Just came back from my son’s wife’s grandfather’s funeral.
He was 102. He was raised in an orphanage in Spokane.
Virgil left at 13, and had to defend his street corner selling newspapers. He worked on the Grand Could dam, and built his house in Portland with scrapwood. He donated lots of money to help the unfortunate. His son gave a great tribute...

Survival and a meaningful life are the best revenge against those who tried to destroy you.

Indeed. I had over 6 years of seeing him at family events. Wish I had known more of his past...

It would be very nice, and much appreciated, if you could elaborate a little. We FRiends are a brotherhood and it is very nice to know a little about each other.

An observant Jew, Kristal himself only celebrated his bar mitzvah last year, a hundred years later than usual.

Gotta love a story like that!

Virgil’s mom died in child birth. His dad tried to support his three kids, but ended up giving them to the Catholic orphanage. Some kids would get a nickel and such, and get some candy. Virgil wasn’t so lucky, until one day he saw an old boot. He picked it up and underneath was a dime. That was the beginning of his faith in God. He bought candy for his friends with it.

In 1986 I had a time of renewal in my faith, after my third son was born (the one that married Virgil’s granddaughter).
I was remodeling my FIL’s room, and listening to a Christian radio program who talked of fullfilling broken promises. I searched my memory, and thought of a pair of outgrown cowboy boots my dad said he would replace (8 yo?) that didn’t happen.

Well, my dad died in 1987, and I brought home a variety of his stuff. Some of you may have an ear for the Spirit of God, but as I passed my closest, the Lord said: Look down.
There was a pristine pair of boots my dad bought in CO on a business trip. I got my boots.

People who survive such ordeals seem to live longer. I don’t know if it toughens them, kills the week ones, or helps them mentally by convincing them that they can survive anything.
