The Higher Education Establishment insists that its mission is just that. Academic insiders know better.
"Activism in this broad sense rules the day in contemporary higher education," Zena Hitz, a tutor at St. Johns College in Annapolis, writes in the summer 2017 issue of Modern Age. "The core purpose of the University of Texas, according to its mission statement, is 'to transform lives for the benefit of society.'"
"Education is for the sake of 'social transformation,' says Harvard College--or 'the improvement of the world today,' according to Yale University." Yet and still, conservatives ready to high five each other and yell "I told you so" should remember that fundamental law of physics that goes something like, "For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction."
"Activism reaches far beyond progressivism," Hitz writes. "Conservatives, too, use academic institutions to wield social and political influence, and activism is often nonpartisan."
"Partisan politics on campus generates strong emotions, but no one is outraged by the assumption that political and social goods are paramount." Her point about not using colleges and universities for any sort of political partisanship is well taken.
Nevertheless, conservatives may scratch their heads and wonder what "academic institutions" they can enter, let alone "use."
Already done. Colleges etc. have been doing that for years. They need no help, they are experts in deactivation.
If you mean stop paying for the bullets that will kill us - uh, yeah.
Maryland “Freak State” PING!
The individual states could stop this nonsense right now.
Compile a list of those majors in which students are hired to work in their career within six months after graduation, and those who are not. Some majors will have lots of job placements, some will have some. But some will have none. Year after year.
And the state must be clear that it will no longer subsidize these worthless degrees.
And it must go further, that if students want a worthless degree, it must be paid for without student loans. That is, that schools will no longer accept loan money for a worthless degree, just guaranteeing that those students will be impoverished.
From that point, the state legislature must evaluate ALL mandatory classes, to determine if they actually contribute to the students degree, or if they are worthless and frivolous excuses to take money from students while wasting their time.
Finally, faculty who taught worthless and frivolous degrees and courses need to be classed as redundant, so that they can be dismissed even if they have tenure.
If the pending civil war progresses as the left and the media (but I repeat myself) want it to, colleges may find themselves on the list of targets. This could all get real ugly real soon if the leftists keep up the agitation.
The fake universities would be ashes in a week.
