Small group gathers at Fremont's Lenin statue, calls for its removal (Seattle)

Fremont's statue of communist leader Vladimir Lenin has once again come under fire.

On Wednesday afternoon, a small group had gathered in front of the monument in Fremont calling for its removal. The group was seemingly led by Jack Posobiec, a pro-Donald Trump conspiracy theorist and self-described online "alt-right" activist. Posobiec Periscoped part of the gathering on Twitter.

The statue's origin story is well documented.(snip)The statue was toppled in 1989 after the Velvet Revolution toppled communism in Czechoslovakia, and that's when Lewis Carpenter found it in a scrapyard. The English teacher from Issaquah then mortgaged his house to purchase and transport the statue to Washington in 1993 before Carpenter's death in 1994.

Issaquah debated displaying the statue before eventually deciding against it, and Carpenter's family planned to sell it to a Fremont foundry to melt it down, but Seattle sculptor Peter Bevis instead found a place to display the statue in Fremont until the family found a buyer.(snip)

Its arrival in Seattle met with controversy.

"This is highly inappropriate in this community," artist Frederick Edelblut told SeattlePI shortly after its unveiling. "It's not a piece of art. It's a disgrace, a a symbol of denigration, and a symbol of millions of people who have died in Eastern Europe from communist domination."

Bevis disagreed, contending that "art outlives politics," which echoes a sentiment shared on Fremont's official website.

"This sculpture is placed here in the Artist's Republic of Fremont, as a symbol of an artistic spirit that outlasts regimes and ideologies, and as tangible proof that art does outlive politics," it reads.

(snip)The statue, which sports a $250,000 price tag and is still awaiting for a buyer, is often vandalized with graffiti and red paint meant to look like blood.

Liberalism is a mental disorder.

Maybe if they climbed up, and put a rope around the neck and pulled it down, the media would cheer them as heroes. Oh, wait, Lenin’s not a Confederate, so he’s given a pass, respect, and glory.

Seattle officials might agree, but only if Lenin’s statue is replaced by one of Stalin.

They don’t need to destroy it, just move it to Berkeley. It will receive a hero’s welcome.

Why not remove it? In many ways Lenin was just another slavery supporter. Just in a different form.

I remember my visit to Pike Place Market Star Bucks and there outside Star Bucks’ front door was a small band playing good old Soviet work songs. Thought is was funny to have commies playing music in front of a capitalist symbol.

Seattle would support one of Stalin just as well.

Hell, they have communist monuments built at 90% of our universities that are built out of faculty members. That is far more sinister and evil than Confederate memorials. I think we ought to take them ALL down by force!!

Just wondering what 100 feet of det cord would do to the eyesore?
Might be a worthy experiment.

I’ve posted elsewhere that the lenin statue serves a better purpose right where it is. The SeattLunatics think that it makes them “hip” or “edgy” to have it there when in fact it only serves to demonstrate just how easily they would subjugate themselves to a tyrant.

It is true that liberty is precious; so precious that it must be carefully rationed.

Vladimir Lenin

And Seattle erected a statue to the SOB who believed and said that. And worse.
