The Navys top officer says the services new emphasis on character in its leaders is meant as a wake up call for the service to be more competitive.
Particularly in the maritime weve enjoyed preeminence. Those times are coming to a close and we are being contested now in some very important parts of the world and so there is this return to competition. There is a need for leadership, said Chief of Naval Operations Adm. John Richardson in an interview with Federal News Radio.
Last week, the Navy revamped its training paths for officers and enlisted leaders to better emphasize personal attributes that could be beneficial to the service.
(snip)
The push for those attributes comes after the Navy dealt with a series of scandals from some high level leadership, most notably the Fat Leonard scandal in which a contractor bribed Navy officers.

But the plan is more than just making sure Navy leaders are good people, it creates room for leaders to break out of the cookie cutter pathways to leadership and allows for some personal broadening.
Enlisted ranks will take local classes made up of lectures, group discussions and coaching. The pinnacle of enlisted leadership is the senior enlisted academy.
Officers will go through formal leadership schooling associated with major career milestones at the Naval Leadership and Ethics Center. The courses will include department head, commanding officer and major command classes.

How about an emphasis on competence?
That's a novel concept.
OOooohhh Reggie!!Can you meet me on the poop deck.
People laugh at me when I disparage all this damned useless sensitivity training, sexual harassment training,
“How ‘bout training on how to steer a ship...”
That would definitely be a good start...How ‘bout NO training on butt darts, pole smoking, and dressing up like a woman...how ‘bout that — Not sure how those things factor in to making the military I loved and served for 20 years a more fierce and feared fighting force.
Most people have no idea Obongo put women on the subs. It is mess. How about doing something about that.
How about an emphasis on competence?
************
Exactly right.
Knowledge, skills, abilities. And accountability.
Damn, this makes me angry. Loss of life, injury, tax dollars wasted, humiliation, you name it.
If we had a shooting war at sea right now, I suspect we would get our clock cleaned.
It is unnecessary and wasteful.
Thanks for the ping.
“Enlisted ranks will take local classes made up of lectures, group discussions and coaching.” That’s all PC BS. In the “old” Navy a lecture was an ass chewing. There was no touchy feely discussion. Coaching was an ass kicking someplace where the noise level and closed doors kept the “training” private.
If I was CNO whoever came up with that BS would be reassigned to someplace with a view like Adak, Alaska or Guam depending on where the officer grew up. It would not match the climate they were used to.
In the 70s and 80s I was involved in the US Navy’s Leadership and Management Effectiveness Training programs. If the current emphasis detracts from training in technical and combat leadership areas then it will be very counter-productive. Nobody, least of all me, is opposed to an emphasis on ethical leadership but, if emphasis is needed, it should not be at the expense of combat training and readiness.
My son is active USN and I want effective and ethical leaders ordering him into harm’s way.
What you really need is some good boat drivers!
What we say when the next collision happens.... just ANOTHER stroke of bad luck...
Funny how more leadership leads to less leadership.
I my day training was in navigation trainers and tactical trainers.
Exactly. At this point, are our vessels better in the hands of some crazy swamp coonasses rocketed through a 6wk boat-driving boot camp? We know at least they’d take the job seriously.
How about some inside poop on the reasons for the Fitzgerald’s collision?
Obama and his administration promoted a black woman to full admiral (Michelle Howard) who had zero command experience on warships (a support ship only, and one stint, IIRC) and did this over the advancement of dozens of other naval officers who had sterling and relevant naval service records.
Here is her flag advancement:
Rank Date
Admiral-July 1, 2014
Vice admiral-August 24, 2012
Rear admiral-August 1, 2010
Rear admiral (lower half)-September 1, 2007
Gee. Fast track. Wonder why? But this is one, single example. I suspect this has been going on at all ranks, all specialties for at least the last eight years, perhaps more.
Anyone who thinks promoting people based on something other than ability (such as gender, sexual orientation, skin color, religion, or political affiliation) won’t have a destructive effect on capability is part of the problem.
And we have a problem.
How about qualification, competence, character, effectiveness first?
As far as what the CNO said, I don’t know what the hell he said or meant. Sounded an awful lot like more PC crap that killed 10 seamen who are crushed to death in their racks.
I hope anyone responsible for this disgrace wakes from horror filled night mares for the rest of their miserable lives and is haunted by the image of 10 sailors bodies crushed and drowned.
This is just incompetence. They rely too much on what the computers tell them and too little on going out to see what is.
This just demonstrates the need for greater diversity. After all, diversity is our strength. If there’s a problem, then that’s the solution. The Navy needs more trannies.
results of the pussification and enforcement of LBGT rights forced on our military by the traitor in chief and his minions...including McMaster
