The North Shore Health Department has confirmed that two bats found in North Shore communities have tested positive for rabies. Both bats were captured by residents — one after contact with a human, the other with a dog.

Rabies is a serious viral disease that can be transmitted from infected mammals to humans through a bite, scratch, or when animal saliva comes into contact with broken skin.

A famous rabies case from recent years involved a little girl simply picking up and handling a dead bat. She developed rabies and was put in a long coma to cure her, but she still had medical issues after that. One of the few documented cases of a person surviving after developing rabies symptoms.

In article: Wisconsin

“To report human exposure to a bat or animal that may have rabies, contact your local public health department. In the North Shore communities of Bayside, Brown Deer, Fox Point, Glendale, River Hills, Shorewood and Whitefish Bay, call (414) 371-2980. For more information, visit https://www.dhs.wisconsin.gov/rabies/index.htm";

The “North Shore” that the article is referring to are the northern suburbs of Chicago that run up the shore of Lake Michigan.

I stand corrected. I grew up on the North Shore north of Chicago and rabid bats have been discovered in a couple of our communities as well.

It really doesn't matter. If you are bitten by a bat, kill it and get to the hospital for prelim treatment while the Health Dept. checks the carcass for rabies. Happened to me. Bat was rabid. I got the shots. Not painful and was effective.

They've got this all wrong....

Grab a tennis racket and smack the thing hard as it's flying around in the room. Knowing full well you've killed the thing, take it to the DNR and let them figure out whether the dead bat has rabies.

I am NOT going to try to capture a bat alive......ain't gonna happen.

The bat must have contracted rabies from an Antifa mob.

This is in Wisconsin, and is called the North Shore as it is the northern shore in that state. In actuality it is the south shore of Lake Superior. In Minnesota the North Shore refers to the stretch of Lake Superior from Duluth up to Grand Marais, MN.

I see articles posted here that often do not clarify where the place in the article is located. In this instance, at the end of the story, there is a reference to Wisconsin in the URL.

As a kid, we’d try to kill bats with .410 shotguns. Got a few but not many. Most disappeared into the night.

When I was in the Army, I was stationed in Panama. Every evening as the sun was setting, bats by the 10s of thousands would come swarming out of the tiled shingles of our three story barracks at Ft. Clayton.............

It was cool to watch and I often wondered which one was in charge of the alarm clock.......LOL!

What's cool about bats in a tropical environment such as Panama, you can hear their faint screeches all over the place but you can't see them until they fly by a street lamp........

A number of years ago while on vacation in Honduras, we visited the Mayan ruins in Copan. one night we ended up on a dirt road up in the hills and in the headlights you could see bats flying all over the place.........
