In fact I’m not mad.

I found out five years ago to my total astonishment that there’s virtually nothing on the internet about Japan’s spectacular success in throwing out the trouble causing Muslims.

but I will tell you the big rumor why the government of Japan wants to banish ALL record of that history:

The YAKUZA helped in the expulsions.

I know all about that in fact there have been a number of false allegations about how it’s impossible to be a Muslim in Japan.

all of those allegations were technically incorrect, for example, you can import korans, you can legally learn Arabic, there are some mosques in Japan.

you can technically be a Muslim, you can qualify for a loan to get home...

but the notion that there are many Muslims in Japan, that’s false and there will never be many Muslims in Japan.

In fact the YouTuber who took the lead in popularizing the Snopes link that you listed is a white Canadian who converted to Islam..!

She is something of a wayward spirit and a little inexplicable.

A lot of people hate her freaking guts, though she has a permanent residence card and is now going through the process of trying to get Japanese citizenship, something about her recent prominent conversion will probably not facilitate.

there are probably less than 50,000 Muslims in all of Japan and most of them are on temporary assignment from abroad.

the truth is it is extremely difficult to be a Muslim in Japan, have friends do business, make contacts.

it’s very very very difficult and became more difficult after a cult attacked the subway system with nerve gas.

They won’t if they don’t start having more kids. Their birthdate is below replacement level right now.

There’s a world of difference between “even if” and “even though.”

And you really believe he was addressing his party in English? What's the point of making the distinction (if there is one) when you have no idea what he actually said, in Japanese? Hitler was a deranged scumbag. There's no reason to play the "he was a bastard, but.." game in any way or form. Oh, wait. Autobahn. Well, there's that...

I’m pretty sure that there are corollaries to “if” and “though” in Japanese.

>> Hitler was a deranged scumbag. There’s no reason to play the “he was a bastard, but..” <<

In no way did Aso praise Hitler, or say he had any “right motives.” Breaking Godwin’s law may have been just simply stupid, but the headline falsely suggests a far more horrible thing than Aso said.

the sources cited at the link appear to be authoritative, regardless of what people think of the Mikkelsons or anyone else involved with the site.

I'd assume so as well. My point is that such distinctions often do not survive translation. See that every day...

Fair enough. But what basis is there for presuming that a faulty translation covered up a terrible statement? Which is more likely: that a headline writer added sensationalism to a story; or that a journalist used a bad translation that washed away the entire import of his story, that his editor also missed, but the headline writer noticed and played up but failed to correct? As bad as I believe many journalists and translators do their jobs, I can hardly imagine that the shocking nature of a headline comes from a headline writer being MORE accurate, rather than a headline writer injecting unfair sensationalism.

Following your tangent, in case anyone is curious:

“Islam remains a minority religion in Japan, and there is no evidence as to whether its numbers are increasing... The true size of the current Muslim population in Japan remains a matter of speculation. Japanese scholars such as Hiroshi Kojima of the National Institute of Population and Social Security Research and Keiko Sakurai of Waseda University suggest a Muslim population of around 70,000, of which perhaps 90% are resident foreigners and about 10% native Japanese... Conversion is most (common) among ethnic Japanese women (marrying Muslims)” The Wikipedia sources are two articles, in agreement, dated 2007.

Notice that there are two categories implied in Japanese statistics: resident foreigners and native. “Immigrant” isn’t even a thing.
